Prep

Preparation

5 minutes

  • Review the Empathy Superpower Lesson Plan and ensure all activities are tailored to the student's IEP needs.
  • Familiarize yourself with the Kindness Mirror Activity Worksheet and plan how to guide the student through exploring different perspectives.
  • Have a calm and quiet space set up for the 15-minute session to ensure minimal distractions.

Step 1

Introduction & Setting the Stage

3 minutes

  • Begin by explaining the concept of empathy in simple terms: understanding how others feel.
  • Use visual aids or simple examples to illustrate the idea of how one's actions can affect others' feelings.
  • Emphasize the importance of kindness and how even small acts can change someone's day.

Step 2

Interactive Perspective-Taking Activity

7 minutes

  • Present the Kindness Mirror Activity Worksheet where the student reflects on how her actions might be seen by others.
  • Ask open-ended questions such as, 'How do you think your friend felt when this happened?'
  • Encourage the student to imagine alternative reactions and share how she would feel in similar situations.
  • Validate her responses and gently guide her to connect her feelings with how others might feel.

Reflection & Wrap-Up

5 minutes

  • Summarize the session by asking the student what she learned about empathy.
  • Reinforce the idea by discussing how understanding others' feelings can help her become a better friend and classmate.
  • Affirm her ability to make positive changes and recap the key points discussed.
