Empathy in Action

To teach empathy

This lesson introduces 3rd graders to the concept of empathy through a discussion and a role-playing activity. Empathy is a crucial social-emotional skill that helps students understand and share the feelings of others, fostering a more inclusive and supportive classroom environment. By engaging in this lesson, students will develop a better understanding of how to recognize and respond to the emotions of their peers.

Step 1

Introduction

5 minutes

  • Ask students if they have ever felt happy or sad because of something that happened to a friend.

Step 2

Discussion

10 minutes

  • Use the Discussion Questions to guide a conversation about empathy.
  • Encourage students to share their thoughts and experiences related to understanding others' feelings.

Step 3

Role-Playing Activity

10 minutes

  • Divide students into small groups and provide each group with a Role-Playing Scenario.
  • Ask students to act out their scenario, focusing on how they can show empathy in the situation.
  • After each role-play, discuss as a class how empathy was demonstrated.

Step 4

Closure

5 minutes

  • Recap the key points about empathy and its importance.
  • Ask students to share one way they can practice empathy in their daily lives.
