Explore and express emotions

This lesson uses imaginative play to help young students explore and express a range of emotions. Through role-playing and imaginative scenarios, students will practice empathy and improve their social skills by understanding different perspectives. This lesson is important as it fosters emotional intelligence and helps children develop the ability to empathize with others, which is crucial for their social development.

Step 1

Introduction

3 minutes

  • Gather students in a circle.
  • Briefly explain that today they will be exploring different emotions through play.
  • Discuss why understanding emotions is important for making friends and feeling good.

Step 2

Role-Playing Activity

10 minutes

  • Divide students into small groups.
  • Provide each group with a role-play scenario card (e.g., "You lost your favorite toy," "Your friend is sad," etc.).
  • Ask students to act out the scenario, focusing on expressing the emotions involved.
  • Encourage them to think about how they would feel and how others might feel in the situation.

Step 3

Emotion Faces

5 minutes

  • Show students emotion face cards (happy, sad, angry, surprised, etc.).
  • Ask students to mimic the faces and guess the emotion.
  • Discuss what might cause someone to feel each emotion and how they can help a friend who feels that way.

Step 4

Closure

2 minutes

  • Gather students back in a circle.
  • Ask a few students to share what they learned about emotions today.
  • Reinforce the importance of understanding and expressing emotions.
