Emotions and Me

Lesson Plan

Emotions and Me

Understand and express emotions

This lesson helps young students explore different emotions and express them in healthy ways through role-playing and art activities. Students will create an 'Emotion Wheel' to help identify their feelings. This lesson is important for building social-emotional awareness at an early age.

Audience

Pre-Kindergarten to 1st Grade

Time

20 mins

Approach

Understand and express emotions

Materials

Emotion Wheel Template, Crayons/Markers, Scissors, Glue, and Emotion Role-Playing Cards

Step 1

Introduction

3 mins

Begin by discussing what emotions are. Ask students to share some emotions they know (e.g., happy, sad, angry, etc.). Explain that everyone has emotions and it's important to understand and express them.

Step 2

Role-Playing Emotions

5 mins

Hand out Emotion Role-Playing Cards to students. Have each student act out the emotion on their card while others guess what emotion it is. Discuss how they can tell which emotion someone is feeling by looking at facial expressions and body language.

Step 3

Art Activity: Emotion Wheel

8 mins

Provide each student with an Emotion Wheel Template. Have them color in each section with a different emotion, using colors that represent how that emotion feels to them. Once they are done coloring, help them cut out the wheel and assemble it with glue. Explain that they can use the wheel to show how they feel by pointing to the corresponding section.

Step 4

Closing Discussion

4 mins

Gather the students in a circle and discuss what they have learned about emotions. Ask how the Emotion Wheel can help them express their feelings. Encourage them to use the wheel at home or in class when they need to share how they are feeling.
