Emotional Check-In Circle

Encourage self-expression and empathy

In this lesson, students will participate in an Emotional Check-In Circle, a safe space activity where they can share their current emotions and concerns. This activity is designed to foster self-expression and empathy, building a communal understanding and support network within the classroom. It is important as it helps students articulate their feelings and develop emotional intelligence, which is crucial for their social and emotional development.

Talking piece (e.g., a small object to pass around), and Discussion guide

Step 1

Introduction

3 minutes

  • Gather students in a circle.
  • Explain the purpose of the Emotional Check-In Circle: a safe space to share feelings and listen to others.
  • Introduce the talking piece and explain that only the person holding it may speak.

Step 2

Sharing Session

12 minutes

  • Pass the talking piece around the circle.
  • Encourage each student to share how they are feeling today and any concerns they might have.
  • Remind students to listen respectfully and without interrupting.

Step 3

Reflection

3 minutes

  • After everyone has had a chance to share, discuss as a group how it felt to express and listen.
  • Ask students to reflect on any common themes or new understandings they gained from the session.

Step 4

Closure

2 minutes

  • Thank students for their participation and openness.
  • Encourage them to continue supporting each other and to use the circle as a tool for future emotional check-ins.
