Emotion Toolbox Framework
- Identify high-stress moments
- Select regulation strategies
- Implement the chosen tools
- Evaluate effectiveness
Present the key steps of the Emotion Toolbox Framework. Use a simple graphic showing the four phases.
Step 1: Identify
• Pinpoint specific stress situations
• Notice physical and emotional signs
• Example: Tantrum at the grocery store
Discuss how to recognize common stress triggers in parenting. Ask the parent to share an example.
Step 2: Select
Choose strategies from categories:
• Breathing (e.g., 4-7-8 exercise)
• Mindfulness (e.g., grounding techniques)
• Problem-Solving (e.g., planning ahead)
• Self-Care (e.g., quick walk)
Review categories of tools. Highlight examples in each.
Encourage the parent to think what feels natural to them.
Step 3: Implement
• Use the tool in the moment
• Focus on one strategy at a time
• Stay mindful of your response
Explain how to put tools into practice during a stressful moment.
Role-play a quick scenario if time allows.
Step 4: Evaluate
• Log each use (Tool Use Tracker)
• Reflect on what worked (Reflection Log)
• Adjust and add new tools as needed
Emphasize the importance of tracking and reflecting to refine the toolbox over time.
Summary & Next Steps
• Review your personalized toolbox
• Plan for daily practice and tracking
• Next session: Discuss tracker and reflection entries
Summarize the session outcomes and discuss next steps, including follow-up and ongoing practice.
Activity
Tool Selection Game Activity
Objective: Help the parent explore, discuss, and choose a set of emotion-regulation tools that feel most comfortable and relevant to their high-stress moments.
Duration: 10 minutes
Materials:

- Ask:
- “When might this be helpful for you?”
- “On a scale of 1–5, how comfortable do you feel using this right now?”
- If the parent wants to adopt the tool, they write it on an index card under “My Toolbox.”
- Continue until the parent has 4–6 tools.
- Prioritize Favorites (2 minutes)
- Ask the parent to pick their top 3 tools and mark them with a star.
- Transfer these starred tools onto the Tool Use Tracker Worksheet.
- Wrap-Up Reflection (1 minute)
