Emotion Monsters: Creative Expression

Identify and express emotions

In this lesson, students will create their own 'Emotion Monster' using various craft materials to depict different feelings. This activity is designed to help young students identify and express emotions in a playful and engaging manner, building their emotional vocabulary and awareness. By engaging in this creative process, students will enhance their understanding of emotions and develop skills in self-expression and empathy.

Step 1

Introduction to Emotions

5 minutes

  • Begin with a brief discussion about emotions. Ask students to name different emotions they know.
  • Explain that emotions are feelings we have inside, like happy, sad, angry, or scared.
  • Introduce the concept of 'Emotion Monsters' as a fun way to show how we feel.

Step 2

Crafting Emotion Monsters

15 minutes

  • Provide each student with craft paper, markers, glue, scissors, and googly eyes.
  • Instruct students to create their own 'Emotion Monster' that represents a specific emotion.
  • Encourage creativity and individuality in their designs.
  • Walk around to assist and engage with students about their chosen emotions.

Step 3

Reflection and Sharing

5 minutes

  • Gather students in a circle to share their 'Emotion Monsters'.
  • Ask each student to describe the emotion their monster represents and why they chose it.
  • Use the Emotion Monster Discussion Questions to facilitate a group discussion about emotions and self-expression.
