Emotion Explorers

Identify and express emotions

In this lesson, students will engage in role-play and storytelling activities to learn how to identify and express their emotions in healthy ways. This lesson is important as it helps young learners build emotional vocabulary and understand how their feelings can affect their behavior, fostering emotional intelligence and empathy.

Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

  • Gather students in a circle and introduce the topic of emotions.
  • Ask students to share how they are feeling today using simple words (e.g., happy, sad, excited).
  • Explain that today they will learn more about different emotions and how to express them.

Step 2

Emotion Vocabulary

10 mins

  • Distribute the 'Emotion Vocabulary Handout' to each student.
  • Go through each emotion on the handout, demonstrating facial expressions and body language.
  • Encourage students to mimic the expressions and discuss when they might feel each emotion.

Step 3

Role-Play Activity

15 mins

  • Divide students into small groups and give each group a set of 'Emotion Role-Play Cards'.
  • Instruct each group to pick a card and act out the emotion without using words.
  • The rest of the class guesses the emotion being portrayed.
  • Rotate roles so each student gets a chance to act and guess.

Step 4

Storytelling Activity

  • Provide each student with a 'Storytelling Prompt' card.
  • Ask students to draw a picture that represents the emotion on their card.
  • Invite students to share their drawings and tell a short story about a time they felt that emotion.

Step 5

Closure

5 mins

  • Gather students back in a circle.
  • Ask students to share one new thing they learned about emotions today.
  • Reinforce the importance of expressing emotions in healthy ways and thank them for participating.

Emotion Vocabulary
