Identify and express emotions

In this lesson, students will learn to identify and express a variety of emotions through creative arts and storytelling. This is essential to help them become more self-aware and to develop their emotional intelligence, which will aid in their social interactions and overall wellbeing.

Step 1

Introduction and Warm-Up

5 mins

  • Welcome students and briefly introduce the topic of emotions.
  • Begin with a fun warm-up activity: Ask students to make various facial expressions and ask the class to identify them.

Step 2

Discussion on Emotions

10 mins

  • Use printable emotion cards to show different emotions (happy, sad, angry, scared, etc.).
  • Discuss each emotion briefly. How does it make them feel inside? What might cause them to feel that way?

Step 3

Creative Arts Activity

15 mins

  • Distribute paper and crayons.
  • Ask students to draw a picture that represents an emotion they have felt recently.
  • Encourage them to use colors that they feel represent their emotions.

Step 4

Storytelling Activity

10 mins

  • Provide students with story prompts that include different emotions. For example, 'Once upon a time, a little boy felt very happy because...'
  • Let students create a short story based on the prompts.

Step 5

Sharing and Discussion

5 mins

  • Allow students to share their drawings and stories with the class.
  • Facilitate a discussion about the different emotions, why they are important, and how we can manage them.
