7th Grade Students

30 minutes

Interactive discussion and a sorting activity to illustrate ecosystem components and interactions.

15 minutes

Review the Ecosystems Slide Deck for familiarity.
- Print copies of the Ecosystem Components Activity (one per small group) and cut out the cards.
- Print copies of the Ecosystem Definitions Worksheet (one per student).
- Ensure access to a projector or interactive whiteboard for the slide deck.
- Familiarize yourself with the Ecosystem Definitions Answer Key.

5 minutes

Begin with a quick question: "What comes to mind when you hear the word 'nature'?" Encourage students to share their initial thoughts.
- Introduce the lesson using the Ecosystems Slide Deck (Slide 1-2). Explain that today's lesson will explore how living things and their environment are connected.

10 minutes

Display Slide 3-5 of the Ecosystems Slide Deck to define 'ecosystem' and introduce abiotic and biotic factors.
- Lead a brief class discussion, asking students to give examples of biotic and abiotic factors they observe in their everyday lives.
- Facilitate the Ecosystem Components Activity in small groups. Students will sort cards into biotic and abiotic categories and discuss how they interact.

10 minutes

Distribute the Ecosystem Definitions Worksheet.
- Instruct students to complete the worksheet independently, applying their understanding of ecosystems and their components.
- Circulate around the room to provide support and answer questions.

5 minutes

Briefly review the answers to the Ecosystem Definitions Worksheet using the Ecosystem Definitions Answer Key, addressing any common misconceptions.
- Ask students to share one new thing they learned about ecosystems today.
- Conclude by emphasizing the importance of understanding and protecting our interconnected world.
