- Print and cut the Challenge Cards Set and the Discussion Prompts Handout.
- Make copies of the Sustainability Solutions Worksheet and the Reflection & Pledge Template for each student.
- Arrange classroom seating in small groups and set out poster paper and markers.
Step 1
Introduction & Engagement
10 minutes
- Display the first slide of the Eco Explorers Slide Deck showing a healthy ecosystem vs. a polluted one.
- Ask: “What do you notice? How might our actions affect these environments?”
- Briefly define sustainability and explain that today students will become Eco Explorers, investigating challenges and creating solutions.
Step 2
Explore Ecological Challenges
15 minutes
- Divide students into small groups and give each group a set of Challenge Cards.
- Using the Discussion Prompts Handout, groups discuss:
• What is the main issue described?
• How does it impact animals, plants, and people? - Each group shares one key insight with the class.
Step 3
Sustainability Solutions Activity
15 minutes
- Hand out the Sustainability Solutions Worksheet.
- In groups, students choose one challenge card and brainstorm at least three solutions, considering feasibility and impact.
- Encourage use of creative, community-based, and individual actions.
Step 4
Group Share & Poster Creation
10 minutes
- Provide each group with poster paper and markers.
- Groups illustrate their chosen challenge and top solution on the poster.
- Display posters around the room and conduct a gallery walk, allowing students to leave positive sticky-note feedback.
Step 5
Reflection & Personal Pledge
10 minutes
- Distribute the Reflection & Pledge Template.
- Individually, students reflect on what they learned and write one specific action they will take to help the planet.

Slide Deck
Eco Explorers: Understanding Our Planet
Grades 4–6 | Sustainability & Ecology
Become an Eco Explorer today!
Welcome students and introduce the session. Explain that they are now Eco Explorers, learning to protect our planet through observing real ecosystems.
Healthy vs. Polluted Ecosystems
Observe these two ecosystems.
• What stands out?
• How do you think human actions affect each?
Display two side-by-side images: a vibrant forest or coral reef vs. a polluted landscape or bleached reef. Ask: “What differences do you notice? How might our actions create or harm these environments?”
Ecological Challenges
Here are some real-world issues:
• Deforestation
• Plastic Pollution
• Water Scarcity
• Endangered Species
Introduce the set of Challenge Cards. Show a sample card illustrating an issue (e.g., plastic pollution). Explain that each group will receive a different card.
Group Discussion
Use your Discussion Prompts:
• What is the main issue?
• How does it impact animals, plants, and people?
Guide groups to use the Discussion Prompts Handout. Encourage each group to pick one card and discuss the two key questions.
Sustainability Solutions
Brainstorm at least three solutions for your challenge:
Hand out the Sustainability Solutions Worksheet. Remind students to think about feasibility, community impact, and creativity.
Create Your Poster
Illustrate your chosen challenge and top solution.
• Use markers and colors
• Add a short caption
Explain poster expectations: clear illustration of the issue plus the top solution. Include labels or short captions.
Reflection & Personal Pledge
Reflect on today’s learning:
• What surprised you?
• My pledge: ________
Distribute the Reflection & Pledge Template. Ask students to write one personal action they will take to help the planet.
Thank You, Eco Explorers!
Great work today!
Let’s keep our planet healthy.
Share one word to describe how you feel.
Wrap up by celebrating student pledges. Encourage ongoing eco-friendly habits and group accountability.
