Long E Sound: ee & ea

Let’s explore how ee and ea make the long E sound!

Welcome class! Today we're going to become “E detectives” and learn how ee and ea make the long E sound. Get ready to listen, practice, and have fun!

The Long E Sound

The long E sound is like saying /ē/. Listen carefully.

Examples:

  • ee: see, tree
  • ea: sea, eat

Play or model the /ē/ sound clearly. Ask students to give thumbs-up if they hear the long E sound and thumbs-down if they don’t.

Choral Practice: ee Words

  • week
  • feet
  • bee
  • sleep

Model each word slowly, then have the class repeat chorally. After each word, point to the ee letters and say, “ee makes /ē/.”

Choral Practice: ea Words

  • team
  • leaf
  • clean
  • dream

Model each ea word and invite students to repeat. Highlight the ea letters and say, “ea makes /ē/ here too.”

Spot the Spelling Pattern

Words with /ē/ can be spelled:

  • ee (always together)
  • ea (often in the middle)

Can you spot where they go?

Explain that sometimes we spell /ē/ with ee and sometimes with ea. Show examples and ask students where they think ee or ea belongs.

Word Card Sorting

Instructions:

  1. In your groups, sort word cards under “ee” or “ea.”
  2. Place each card in the correct column.
  3. Be ready to explain your choices.

Divide students into small groups and distribute word cards. Set a timer for 5 minutes. Circulate to prompt discussion and correct any errors.

Sentence Building

Complete each sentence with the correct ee or ea word.

  1. The ___ is on the table. (team / teem)
  2. I saw a ___ flying. (bee / bae)

Hand out the sentence-building worksheet. Students choose the right ee or ea word, write the sentence on their whiteboards, then hold them up for you to check.

Quick Quiz

Choose the correct word:

  1. I ___ my homework. (eat / eet)
  2. The cat has soft ___. (feet / feat)
  3. We ___ together. (meet / meat)

Project or hand out the quick quiz as an exit ticket. Give students 2 minutes to answer all three and then collect their papers.

Great Job, E Detectives!

You mastered ee and ea words!

Keep listening for the long E sound in your reading.

Celebrate the students’ success and remind them to keep listening for /ē/ whenever they read or write. Encourage them to spot ee and ea in storybooks.
