Dreamers' Leafy Art Adventure

Learn about leaf shapes and colors

In this lesson, kids will use leaves and pumpkins to create colorful art pieces. They will learn about different leaf shapes and colors and engage in creative expression. This lesson helps children develop their observation skills and creativity, fostering an appreciation for nature.

Materials

Colored paper, Glue, Scissors (child-safe), Leaves (various shapes and sizes), Small pumpkins or pumpkin templates, Crayons and markers, and Printed Leaf Shape Descriptions

Step 1

Introduction to Leaves and Pumpkins

5 mins

Begin the lesson by showing children different types of leaves and small pumpkins. Discuss the variety of shapes and colors, explaining how each leaf and pumpkin is unique. Use the Printed Leaf Shape Descriptions to help children identify and understand different leaf shapes.

Step 2

Leaf and Pumpkin Collection

5 mins

Take the children outside (if possible) to collect a variety of leaves. If not feasible, provide them with pre-collected leaves and small pumpkins or pumpkin templates. Encourage them to choose leaves and pumpkins of different shapes and sizes.

Step 3

Art Creation

15 mins

Distribute the collected or pre-collected leaves, small pumpkins or pumpkin templates, colored paper, glue, scissors, crayons, and markers. Instruct the children to create their art pieces by gluing the leaves onto the paper and decorating small pumpkins or drawing pumpkins alongside the leaves. Encourage creative and colorful expressions.

Step 4

Show and Tell

Ask each child to share their artwork with the group and explain why they chose certain leaves, pumpkins, and colors. Encourage positive feedback from their peers, fostering a sense of accomplishment and community.

This handout provides descriptions and images of various leaf shapes to help children identify them.

Leaf Shapes

  1. Oval Leaf: This leaf is shaped like an egg, wider in the middle and tapered at both ends.
  2. Heart-Shaped Leaf: This leaf looks like a heart, with a pointed tip and a rounded base.
  3. Star-Shaped Leaf: This leaf has multiple points, resembling a star.
  4. Round Leaf: This leaf is circular, almost like a coin.
  5. Lobed Leaf: This leaf has deep indentations along its edges, creating distinct lobes.
