Discovering Point-Slope Form

Learn and apply point-slope form.

In this lesson, students will learn about the point-slope form of a linear equation through an interactive activity and a worksheet. This approach ensures students understand the concept and can apply it to solve problems. Using Project-Based Learning and Active Learning strategies helps students engage fully and facilitates deeper understanding.

Step 1

Introduction

5 minutes

Begin by briefly explaining what point-slope form is and why it is useful: y - y₁ = m(x - x₁), where m is the slope and (x₁, y₁) is a point on the line. Provide a simple example by plotting a point and drawing a line with a given slope on the whiteboard.

Step 2

Activity: Point-Slope Form Scavenger Hunt

15 minutes

Organize students into small groups and provide each group with graph paper, rulers, and markers. Each group will be given a series of points and slopes. Their task is to plot these points and use the slopes to create lines, then write the corresponding point-slope equations on their graphs. Walk around to assist and ask probing questions. Example points/slopes to use: (2, 3) with slope 2, (1, -1) with slope -1/2, etc.

Step 3

Worksheet Completion

5 minutes

Distribute the 'Point-Slope Form Practice' worksheet. Explain that this worksheet will reinforce the skills they've just practiced. Students can begin working on the first few problems in class, and then take the rest home to complete.

Step 4

Closing Discussion

5 minutes

Bring students back together and discuss the activity's outcomes. Ask a few groups to share their equations and how they derived them. Summarize the importance of being able to write equations in point-slope form and how this skill applies to real-world situations.

This worksheet provides practice problems for students to apply their knowledge of point-slope form. It includes problems that require students to write equations using given points and slopes and to convert point-slope form to slope-intercept form.

1. Write the equation of a line with slope 3 passing through the point (2, -1) in point-slope form.








2. Transform the point-slope equation y - 4 = 2(x - 1) into slope-intercept form.








3. Given the point-slope equation y + 2 = -1/2(x - 3), identify the slope and the point.








4. Write the equation of a line passing through (0, 0) with a slope of 5 in point-slope form.
