Digital Balance: Mindful Tech

Students will learn strategies for mindful digital engagement, balance screen time, foster positive online habits, recognize the impact of digital media on mood and focus, and develop healthy digital boundaries.

In today's interconnected world, managing digital engagement is crucial for overall well-being. This lesson helps students develop essential life skills to navigate the digital landscape responsibly, promoting mental health, focus, and productivity.

Prep

Teacher Preparation

15 minutes

  • Review the Digital Balance Slides and customize as needed.
    - Print copies of the Digital Habits Worksheet (one per student).
    - Prepare Digital Life Balance Activity Cards by printing and cutting them out.
    - Prepare copies of the Exit Ticket: My Digital Pledge (one per student).
    - Ensure access to a smartboard or projector for the slides.

Step 1

Warm-Up: Digital Check-In (10 minutes)

10 minutes

  • Display the first slide of the Digital Balance Slides with the warm-up question.
    - Ask students: "How much time do you think you spend on screens each day? What are your favorite digital activities?"
    - Facilitate a brief class discussion, encouraging students to share their initial thoughts and observations about their digital habits. Use the Digital Balance Script for guidance.

Step 2

Introduction: The Digital World (10 minutes)

  • Present slides 2-4 of the Digital Balance Slides introducing the concept of digital balance and online well-being.
    - Discuss the benefits and challenges of digital media. Use the Digital Balance Script to guide the conversation.
    - Emphasize the importance of mindful engagement rather than complete abstinence.

Step 3

Activity: Digital Habits Self-Assessment (15 minutes)

15 minutes

  • Distribute the Digital Habits Worksheet to each student.
    - Instruct students to complete the self-assessment individually, reflecting on their current digital habits.
    - After completion, lead a brief discussion on their findings, focusing on patterns and insights without requiring students to share personal details. Refer to the Digital Balance Script for prompts and guiding questions.

Discussion: Finding Your Balance (15 minutes)
