De Fābulā: Chatmat

Let's talk about plays in Latin! Get ready to chat and choose your character's actions!

Welcome students and introduce the day's topic: talking about plays in Latin. Emphasize the fun, interactive nature of the lesson.

What's Our Goal Today?

Objective:

  • To use Latin phrases to describe actions related to attending a play.
  • To practice speaking and understanding Latin in a conversational context.
  • To expand our Latin vocabulary for daily activities.

Clearly state the objective. Students should understand they are learning practical conversational phrases.

Chatmat? Quid est hoc?

A Chatmat is like a menu of phrases!

  • You choose the phrases that fit your character or what you want to say.
  • It helps us speak Latin without memorizing full sentences right away!
  • Think of it as your personal Latin cheat sheet for conversation!

Explain what a chatmat is and how it will be used. Show the De Fābulā Chatmat Worksheet if possible.

How to Use Your Chatmat

Instructions:

  1. Choose: Read the questions and the Latin phrases.
  2. Translate: Figure out what each phrase means.
  3. Decide: Pick the phrase(s) that best describe what your character does.
  4. Write or Cut: Fill in the blanks or use the slips to build your responses.

Example Question: What does your character do when they go to a play?

  • cibum portō — I carry food
  • amīcōs inveniō — I find my friends
  • sellās inveniō — I find chairs
  • actōrēs vetuperō — I curse out the actors

Go over the instructions for the worksheet. Show an example from Section A.1.

Let's Try Another!

Example Question: Quid tū fēcistī? (What did you do?)

  • vīnum emō — I buy wine
  • clāmō vehementer — I shout loudly
  • plaudō vehementer — I clap loudly
  • actōrēs laudō — I praise the actors

Which one would your character choose? Why?

Provide another example from Section A.2 to ensure understanding.

New Phrases!

We also have some NEW PHRASES to add to our conversations!

  • These cover general actions, food, sleeping, and more.
  • Don't be afraid to mix and match them!
  • Use your imagination to create a fun character and story!

Encourage students to use the new phrases from Section B during their paired practice.

Fantastic Chatting!

You've done a great job practicing your Latin today!

  • Keep using these phrases!
  • Latin can be a living language, and you are making it so!

Valete, discipuli! (Goodbye, students!)

Conclude by summarizing the learning and encouraging continued practice.
