Explore dance for exercise and expression

In this lesson, students will explore various styles of dance as a form of exercise and self-expression. They will learn a simple dance routine to improve their coordination and fitness. Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

  • Begin with a brief discussion on the importance of physical activity and how dance can be a fun way to stay fit.
  • Ask students if they have any favorite dance styles or experiences with dancing.

Step 2

Exploration of Dance Styles

10 mins

  • Introduce students to different styles of dance (e.g., hip-hop, ballet, salsa, jazz).
  • Play short clips of each style to give students a sense of the music and movements involved.

Step 3

Learning the Dance Routine

20 mins

  • Distribute the dance routine handout.
  • Teach students a simple dance routine step-by-step, breaking down each movement.
  • Encourage students to practice the routine in small groups, offering guidance and support as needed.

Dance Routine Handout

This handout provides the steps for the simple dance routine that students will learn during the lesson.

Simple Dance Routine Steps

  1. Step Touch: Step to the right with your right foot, then touch your left foot next to it. Repeat on the left side.
  2. Grapevine: Step to the right with your right foot, cross your left foot behind, step to the right again, and touch your left foot next to it. Repeat on the left side.
  3. Box Step: Step forward with your right foot, step forward with your left foot, step back with your right foot, and step back with your left foot.
  4. Spin and Clap: Spin in place and clap your hands above your head.
  5. Freestyle: Encourage students to add their own moves for 8 counts.
