Check-In Conversation Guide

Purpose: This guide provides word-for-word prompts and transitions to lead the student through each part of the daily check-in protocol in 5 minutes.

1. Warm-Up Poll (1 minute)

Teacher: "Let's start with our Quick Feelings Poll. Please complete the Quick Feelings Poll by rating how you feel right now. Just let me know when you're done."

Teacher: "Thank you. I see you chose __. Can you tell me what that number means for how you're feeling today?"

Possible Follow-Up Prompts:

  • "What words come to mind when I say you feel like that?"
  • "Is there something happening right now that affects how you feel?"

2. Mood Meter Check (1 minute)

Teacher: "Next, take a look at the Morning Mood Meter and circle the word that best describes how you feel."

Teacher: "I notice you selected __. What made you choose that spot on the meter?"

Follow-Up Prompt: "Can you give me an example from today or yesterday that influenced that choice?"

3. Reflect on Triggers (1 minute)

Teacher: "Let's think back to yesterday. Did anything happen that triggered negative or stressful feelings?"

Teacher: "What happened, and how did you react in that moment?"

Possible Follow-Up Prompts:

  • "How did your body react when that happened?"
  • "What thoughts were going through your mind?"
  • "Is there anything you'd like to do differently if it happens again?"

4. Celebrate Small Wins (1 minute)

Teacher: "Great work reflecting. Now, tell me one thing you felt good about since our last check-in."

Teacher: "How did that accomplishment make you feel?"

Follow-Up Prompt: "What helped you achieve that win?"

5. Set a Positive Goal (1 minute)

Teacher: "Finally, let's set one small goal for today. What do you want to accomplish before our next check-in?"

Teacher: "What's one specific step you'll take today toward that goal?"

Possible Follow-Up Prompts:

  • "When exactly will you do that step?"
  • "What might get in the way, and how can you handle it?"

Closing Encouragement:

Teacher: "Thanks for sharing and setting your goal. You're doing great work on understanding your feelings and planning for success. I'll check in with you again tomorrow. Keep up the good work!"
