Tower Challenge Instructions

Goal

Build the tallest free-standing tower possible that supports a large marshmallow on top.

Materials (per team)

  • 20 sheets of plain paper
  • 1 roll of tape
  • 1 pair of scissors
  • 1 large marshmallow

Rules

  1. Use only the materials provided.
  2. Tower must stand on its own for at least 10 seconds.
  3. The marshmallow must rest fully on top—no leaning against walls, tables, or other supports.
  4. Teams have exactly 25 minutes: 5 minutes to plan, 15 minutes to build, and 5 minutes to finalize.
  5. Clean up all materials and return leftovers to the supply station at the end.

Steps

1. Planning (5 minutes)

  • Gather as a team and review your role responsibilities.
  • Sketch a quick design or outline steps in your notebook.
  • Decide how many paper sheets to use for the base, supports, and tower body.

2. Building (15 minutes)

  • Construct your tower according to your plan.
  • Test stability as you go—make small adjustments.
  • Keep communication open: leader prompts discussion, timekeeper warns of remaining time, materials manager organizes supplies, recorder notes any design changes.

3. Finalize & Prepare (5 minutes)

  • Place the marshmallow on top and let the tower settle.
  • Ensure the tower can stand unaided for 10 seconds.

Measurement & Testing

  1. Bring your tower to the measurement station.
  2. Use the ruler or tape measure to record the height from the base to the top of the marshmallow.
  3. Record your team’s height on the class chart.

Clean-Up

  • Carefully disassemble your tower and return unused materials.
  • Wipe down your workspace and put tools back in their bins.
