Cultivating Gratitude

Explore and express gratitude

This lesson invites students to explore what they are thankful for and how gratitude can positively impact their wellbeing. Students will create a 'gratitude chain' that visually represents the good things in their lives, promoting a positive mindset and appreciation for their community. This lesson is important as it helps students develop a positive outlook, enhances their emotional wellbeing, and fosters a sense of community and appreciation.

Step 1

Introduction

5 minutes

  • Begin by asking students what they think gratitude means.
  • Discuss how being thankful can make us feel happier and more connected to others.
  • Explain that today, we will create a 'gratitude chain' to show what we are thankful for.

Step 2

Gratitude Discussion

5 minutes

  • Use the provided discussion questions to guide a conversation about gratitude.
  • Encourage students to share examples of things they are thankful for in their lives.
  • Highlight the importance of recognizing and appreciating the good things around us.

Step 3

Creating the Gratitude Chain

10 minutes

  • Distribute paper strips and markers/crayons to each student.
  • Instruct students to write or draw something they are thankful for on each strip.
  • Once completed, help students link their strips together to form a chain using tape or glue.
  • As a class, connect all individual chains to create a large classroom gratitude chain.

Step 4

Closure

5 minutes

  • Display the gratitude chain in the classroom as a reminder of the positive things in students' lives.
  • Reflect on how it feels to see all the things we are thankful for.
  • Encourage students to continue thinking about gratitude in their daily lives.
