Creative Calm: Artful Breathing

Combine breathing with art

This lesson engages students in combining simple breathing techniques with expressive art. Students will learn to focus on their breathing while creating fluid, abstract drawings, serving as both a stress-relief exercise and a form of creative expression. This lesson is important as it helps students develop mindfulness and emotional regulation skills, which are crucial for managing stress and enhancing creativity.

Materials

Paper, Colored pencils or markers, Calm music playlist, and Discussion Questions

Step 1

Introduction

5 minutes

  • Briefly introduce the concept of combining breathing techniques with art.
  • Explain the benefits of mindfulness and creative expression for stress relief.
  • Set the tone by playing calm background music.

Step 2

Guided Breathing Exercise

5 minutes

  • Lead students through a simple breathing exercise:
    • Inhale deeply through the nose for 4 counts.
    • Hold the breath for 4 counts.
    • Exhale slowly through the mouth for 4 counts.
    • Repeat for a few cycles, encouraging students to focus on their breath.

Step 3

Art Creation

15 minutes

  • Distribute paper and colored pencils or markers to each student.
  • Instruct students to create abstract drawings while continuing to focus on their breathing.
  • Encourage them to let their breath guide their hand movements, creating fluid and expressive lines and shapes.

Step 4

Reflection and Discussion

5 minutes

  • Facilitate a discussion using the prepared questions:
    • How did focusing on your breath affect your drawing process?
    • Did you notice any changes in your mood or stress levels?
    • How can you use this technique in your daily life?
  • Encourage students to share their artwork and experiences if they feel comfortable.
