Prep
Material Preparation
20 minutes
- Print and cut out multiple sets of Addition Puzzle Cards.
- Display Regrouping Strategy Posters around the room.
- Photocopy Answer Recording Sheets for each student.
- Photocopy Addition Exit Ticket.
- Review Addition Solution Keys to ensure familiarity with problem solutions.
- Launch and test the Classroom Timer before class begins.
Step 1
Warm-Up and Strategy Review
5 minutes
- Gather students and briefly review place-value concepts.
- Use the Regrouping Strategy Posters to prompt students to describe when and why they carry over in addition.
- Ask 2–3 quick mental math addition questions (e.g., 47 + 38) and have volunteers share their steps.
Step 2
Introduce Puzzle Challenge
5 minutes
- Explain the rules of the decode activity: each Addition Puzzle Card has a hidden code revealed by solving the addition problem.
- Model one example: solve the addition, find the matching code, and record it on the Answer Recording Sheet.
- Emphasize checking work with the Addition Solution Keys.
Step 3
Partner Puzzle Activity
15 minutes
- Arrange students in pairs and distribute one set of Addition Puzzle Cards and an Answer Recording Sheet to each pair.
- Start the Classroom Timer for 12 minutes; pairs solve as many puzzles as they can, using strategies from the posters.
- Circulate to monitor understanding, prompt with guiding questions, and remind pairs to verify with the Addition Solution Keys.
- After 12 minutes, give a 3-minute warning and encourage teams to finish current puzzles.
Step 4
Exit Ticket and Reflection
5 minutes
- Distribute the Addition Exit Ticket to each student.
- Set the Classroom Timer for 4 minutes; students solve the exit problem independently.
- Collect exit tickets and recording sheets to assess mastery and identify areas for reteaching.
- Conclude by asking a volunteer to share one strategy they found most helpful from the Regrouping Strategy Posters.

Crack the Addition Code
Solve puzzles to practice multi-digit addition with regrouping—let's unlock the secret codes!
Welcome students! Introduce the title and build excitement for today’s puzzle-based addition challenge. Explain that we’ll decode secret codes by mastering multi-digit addition with regrouping.
Lesson Objectives
- Apply multi-digit addition with regrouping
- Decode hidden codes by solving addition problems
- Practice mental strategies and step-by-step algorithms
Read each objective aloud and ensure students understand what success looks like today.
Why Regrouping Matters
Regrouping (carrying) helps us add numbers accurately and efficiently. Mastery builds a foundation for advanced math.
Discuss why regrouping is an essential skill for accurate, efficient addition and how it supports more advanced math topics.
Regrouping Strategy Posters
- Line up place values
- Add digits starting from the rightmost column
- Carry over when sum is ≥ 10
- Record the carry in the next column
Point out the posters around the room. Walk through each step and invite students to repeat the process.
Puzzle Challenge Rules
- Solve the addition on each puzzle card.
- Find the hidden code linked to your sum.
- Record the code on your answer sheet.
- Check your work with the solution key.
Explain each rule of the puzzle challenge. Model how to locate and record the hidden code using the solution key.
Example Puzzle Walkthrough
Puzzle: 456 + 378 = ?
- 6 + 8 = 14 ( write 4, carry 1 )
- 5 + 7 + 1 = 13 ( write 3, carry 1 )
- 4 + 3 + 1 = 8 → Sum = 834
Code for 834 = B7
Record: B7
Work through this example step by step. Show how the sum maps to a secret code.
Partner Puzzle Activity
• Sit with your partner
• Use one set of puzzle cards + answer sheet
• Solve as many as you can in 12 minutes
• Validate answers with the solution key
Arrange students in pairs, distribute puzzle cards and answer sheets, and remind them to use strategies from the posters.
You have 12 minutes to crack the codes. Get ready, set, go!
Press play on the timer video now. After 9 minutes, give a 3-minute warning. Circulate and support teams.
Exit Ticket
Solve: 729 + 486 = ___
Show all addition steps and write your final sum.
Hand out exit tickets. Set the timer for 4 minutes. Students work independently and then submit.
Reflection
Share one strategy from the regrouping posters that helped you today.
Invite volunteers to share their go-to regrouping strategies. Reinforce key takeaways.

Regrouping Strategy Posters
Use these posters around the room as a quick‐reference guide when you’re adding multi‐digit numbers with regrouping (carrying). Hang each “step” poster separately so students can move through the process visually.
Step 1: Align Place Values
- Write each number in its own row.
- Line up digits in the ones, tens, and hundreds columns.
Step 2: Add the Ones Column
- Add the digits in the ones place first.
- If the sum is 10 or more, write down the ones digit and carry (regroup) the tens digit to the next column.
Step 3: Add the Tens Column
- Add the digits in the tens place plus any carried number from Step 2.
- If the sum is 10 or more, write down the tens digit and carry the hundreds digit to the next column.
Step 4: Add the Hundreds Column
- Add the digits in the hundreds place plus any carried number from Step 3.
- Write down the entire sum; there will be no more columns to carry into.
Tip: Always double‐check your carries by counting how many tens you moved over—this prevents small mistakes from snowballing!
