Counselor’s Day Uncovered

Welcome! Today we’ll learn about the daily work of our school counselor.

Welcome students! Introduce today’s lesson: We’ll discover what our school counselor does each day. Briefly outline our activities: Pre-assessment, story, role discussion, game, reflection, post-assessment.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the role of a school counselor
  • Identify common counselor tasks
  • Practice expressing questions or concerns
  • Build confidence in seeking help

Read each objective aloud and check for understanding.

Pre-Assessment

Complete the Pre/Post Counselor Assessment (Likert):

Rate each statement on a scale from 1 to 5:
• “I know what a counselor does.”
• “I would talk to a counselor if I needed help.”

Hand out the assessments. Explain the 1–5 scale: 1 = Strongly Disagree, 5 = Strongly Agree. Give clear instructions and assist students who need support.

Story Time

We’re reading the School Counselor Role Book.

Think about:
• What tasks does the counselor do?
• How does the counselor help students?

Show the book. Read aloud key passages. Pause to ask:
• What tasks did you see?
• How did the counselor help?

Discovering Counselor Tasks

Counselors help students in many ways. Common tasks include:
• Listening to students one-on-one
• Teaching about feelings and coping skills
• Leading small group activities
• Helping students solve problems and disagreements
• Meeting with teachers and parents to support students

After reading the story, review each counselor task. Ask students to share where they saw these tasks in the book or in real life.

Counselor Matching Game

In groups of 3–4, match each duty card to its picture using the Counselor Matching Game Cards.

Work together to complete all matches.

Explain rules clearly. Walk around to offer support. Use visuals and sentence frames for students with IEP/504 or ELL needs.

Reflection Activity

Draw a picture of you talking to the counselor.
Write one question or concern you’d share.

Use these sentence frames if you’d like:
“I feel ___ when ___.”
“Can you help me with ___?”

Distribute reflection sheets. Encourage creativity. Provide sentence frames on request.

Post-Assessment & Wrap-Up

Complete the Pre/Post Counselor Assessment (Likert) again.

Compare your scores and celebrate any growth!

Remember: You can visit the counselor anytime you need support.

Collect post-assessments. Highlight any score improvements. Remind students the counselor is here to help.

Game

Counselor Matching Game Cards

Use these cards to play a matching game in small groups. There are 10 cards total: 5 duty description cards and 5 picture cards. Shuffle all cards face down. Students take turns flipping two cards. If the duty description matches the picture, they keep the pair; if not, they turn them back over.

Materials:

Setup:

  1. Print and cut out all cards from the set below.
  2. Mix all cards and place face down on the table.

Cards:

Duty Description Cards:

  • The counselor listens carefully to a student who needs someone to talk to.
  • The counselor guides a small group activity to help students work together.
  • The counselor reads a story aloud to teach about feelings.
  • The counselor helps two students resolve a disagreement and make a plan.
  • The counselor talks with a teacher and parent about ways to help a student succeed.

Picture Cards (placeholders for artwork or clip art):

  • (Picture of counselor listening one-on-one with a student)
  • (Picture of counselor leading a small group activity)
  • (Picture of counselor reading a book to a class)
  • (Picture of counselor helping two students calm down and talk)
  • (Picture of counselor meeting with a teacher and parent)

How to Play:

  1. On your turn, flip over any two cards.
  2. Read the duty description or look at the picture.
  3. If they match (description fits the picture), keep the pair and take another turn.
  4. If they don’t match, flip them back over and the next player goes.
  5. Continue until all pairs are found. The player with the most pairs wins!

Adaptations:

  • For ELL or students needing visuals only: allow drawing cards on a whiteboard.
  • For students needing more support: provide sentence frames to describe why the cards match (e.g., “Both show listening”).
