Understanding a counselor's role

Step 2

Picture Book Reading

  • Read a picture book about school counselors in both English and Spanish. Examples could include books like 'Your School Counselor' by Bailey Bernal (availability in both languages should be confirmed).
  • Discuss the key points from the book as you read.

Step 3

Activity - Counselor Helpers

  • Explain that students are going to be 'Counselor Helpers' and will learn how they can help the counselor.
  • Use the printable cards with different scenarios (e.g., a student looking sad, someone needing help finding something) and ask students to act out how they would help in these situations.
  • Repeat the instructions in Spanish as well.

  • Gather the students back in a circle.
  • Recap the main points by asking, "Can anyone tell me what a counselor does?"
  • Praise students for their participation and remind them that the counselor is someone they can always go to for help.
