Counselor Connect Lesson Plan
8th-grade students will meet their school counselor, learn how to access support services, and create personalized name tents while sharing their insights through pre- and post-session surveys to prepare for a successful 8th grade and transition to 9th grade.
Introducing 8th graders to their counselor builds trust, clarifies available supports, fosters a positive classroom community, and gives the counselor key insights into students’ needs as they finish middle school.

Prep
Teacher Preparation
15 minutes
- Print copies of the Counselor Connect Pre-Survey, the Counselor Connect Needs Assessment, and Counselor Connect Post-Survey
- Load the Counselor Connect Slides on the classroom projector
- Gather blank name tent cards, colored markers, pencils or pens, and a timer
- Post the ASCA Mindset & Behavior standards reference sheet where all students can see
Step 1
Pre-Survey Questionnaire
5 minutes
- Distribute the Counselor Connect Pre-Survey to each student
- Explain that this helps you understand their current views and questions about counselor services in 8th grade
- Allow students to complete quietly, then collect their surveys

Needs Assessment
3 minutes
- Hand out the Counselor Connect Needs Assessment
- Explain that this helps identify what support they need most this year
- Give students a few minutes to complete, then collect their responses
Step 3
Name Tent Creation
7 minutes
- Hand out blank name tent cards and colored markers
- On one side, write your name in large, clear letters
- On the other side, draw something you enjoy or something you’re excited to explore in 9th grade
- Spend 5 minutes decorating your tent
- Pair up: show your classmate your tent and explain your drawing (2 minutes)
- Place your finished tent on your desk so everyone can see it
Step 4
Meet Your Counselor & Overview
10 minutes
- Counselor introduces themselves, emphasizing how they support 8th-grade students
- Project the Counselor Connect Slides covering:
• Tips for homework and study strategies in 8th grade
• Managing stress, feelings, and friendships in middle school
• Planning for 9th-grade courses and exploring interests - After each slide, pause to invite questions and clarify for an 8th-grade context
Step 5
Counselor Q&A Game
5 minutes
- Explain the game: students will toss a soft ball around the circle
- The catcher asks the counselor any question about the job, services, or school support
- Counselor gives a brief, student-friendly answer
- Continue until time is up or all students have had a turn
Step 6
Norms & Expectations Discussion
10 minutes
- Ask: “What rules or norms will help us feel safe and respected in our sessions?”
- Record student ideas on chart paper (e.g., listen actively, keep confidences)
- Then ask: “What expectations do you have of me as your counselor?”
- Note student expectations
- Share the counselor’s expectations of students (e.g., honesty, respect, participation) and record them
- Display the finalized norms and expectations for the year

Teacher: “Good morning, everyone! Today is our Counselor Connect session. I’m going to give you a short survey called the Counselor Connect Pre-Survey. This helps me know what you already understand about my job and what you’d like to learn. You have five minutes to finish it. When you’re done, please turn it in quietly. Ready? Go!”
[Set timer for 5 minutes; circulate and collect surveys.]
0:05–0:15 – Name Tent Icebreaker
Teacher: “Nice work on the surveys! Now let’s make name tents so I can learn your names and something about you.
- Take a blank name-tent card and some markers.
- On one side, write your name in big letters.
- On the other side, draw or write one thing you enjoy—like a hobby, sport, favorite game, or a fun fact about yourself.
