Coping Strategies Exploration

Identify 5 coping strategies

This lesson is designed for a one-on-one counseling session with a 4th-grade student. The focus is on helping the student identify five coping strategies they can use when experiencing heightened emotions. This lesson is important as it equips the student with practical tools to manage their emotions, promoting emotional regulation and resilience.

Step 1

Introduction

2 minutes

  • Greet the student warmly and explain the purpose of the session.
  • Briefly discuss what emotions are and why it's important to manage them.

Step 2

Discussion on Emotions

3 minutes

  • Ask the student to share a time when they felt a strong emotion.
  • Discuss how they felt and what they did in response.
  • Introduce the concept of coping strategies as tools to help manage emotions.

Step 3

Brainstorming Coping Strategies

5 minutes

  • Provide the student with the Coping Strategies Worksheet.
  • Guide the student to brainstorm and list five coping strategies they can use.
  • Encourage them to think of strategies they have used before or new ones they might try.

Step 4

Reflection and Closure

5 minutes

  • Review the coping strategies the student listed.
  • Discuss how they might use these strategies in different situations.
  • Encourage the student to keep the Printable Coping Strategy Cards as a reminder.
  • Thank the student for participating and express confidence in their ability to manage emotions.
