Coping Power-Up

Welcome to our session on building your Academic Coping Toolbox!

By the end of today, you will:

  • Learn at least five healthy coping strategies
  • Create a personalized Coping Toolbox
  • Practice choosing strategies for real scenarios

Welcome students and introduce today’s topic. Explain that they will learn skills to handle academic stress and tough emotions. Mention our goal to improve Competency 6 survey results by 10% after this session.

Hook & Set Objective

  1. What academic stresses or tough emotions have you experienced recently?
  2. List responses under “Stressors” on the board.

Objective:
Build a personal toolbox of healthy coping strategies to manage stress and tough emotions.

Prompt students to share their recent academic stressors or tough emotions. Write their responses on the board under “Stressors.” Use this to segue into our objective.

Coping Skills Overview

Categories of Coping Strategies:

  • Physical (e.g., deep breathing, stretching)
  • Cognitive (e.g., positive self-talk, reframing)
  • Social (e.g., talking with a friend, peer support)
  • Proactive (e.g., time management, planning)
  • Reactive (e.g., brief walk, sensory break)

Distribute the Coping Skills Overview Handout now. Review each category and give an example. Ask volunteers to share times they’ve used any strategy.

Build Your Personal Coping Toolbox

Instructions:

  1. Take your Personal Coping Toolbox Template.
  2. Select at least five strategies from the Overview.
  3. Write or draw each strategy in your toolbox space.
  4. Personalize with colors, icons, or illustrations.

Hand out the Personal Coping Toolbox Template. Encourage creativity—colors, drawings, icons. Circulate to support students as they choose at least five strategies.

Scenario Practice

  1. Review these scenarios on the board:
    • Upcoming test anxiety
    • Heavy homework load
    • Group project stress
  2. In pairs, pick which coping strategies you’d use and why.
  3. Share one strategy and its benefit with the class.

Write 2–3 scenarios on the board before class: test anxiety, heavy homework load, group project stress. Organize pairs and let them discuss.

Reflection & Commitment

  • On a sticky note, write one new coping strategy you commit to trying this week.
  • Stick it on our Commitment Board (or hand it to me).

Remember: Use your Coping Toolbox whenever you feel stressed!

Distribute sticky notes now. Give students 1–2 minutes to write their commitment. Collect and review to see which strategies they chose.

Key Takeaways

• Healthy coping strategies come in many forms: physical, cognitive, social, proactive, reactive.
• You’ve built your own Coping Toolbox—keep it where you can see it.
• Practice choosing strategies in real situations.
• Commit to one new strategy this week.

Review the key takeaways: categories of coping, how to build personal toolbox, practicing with scenarios, and making a commitment. Thank students and remind them where to find their toolbox handout.

Coping Skills Overview Handout

What Are Coping Skills?

Coping skills are healthy strategies or actions we use to manage stress, anxiety, and tough emotions. By practicing these skills, you can stay focused, calm, and ready to learn.

Categories of Coping Strategies

  1. Physical – Use your body to relieve tension or boost energy.
    • Examples: deep breathing, stretching or light exercise, progressive muscle relaxation.
  2. Cognitive – Shift your thoughts to feel more confident and calm.
    • Examples: positive self-talk, reframing negative thoughts, visualizing success.
  3. Social – Connect with others for support and perspective.
    • Examples: talking with a friend, asking a teacher for help, joining a study group.
  4. Proactive – Plan and organize ahead of time to prevent overwhelm.
    • Examples: using a planner, breaking tasks into small steps, setting realistic goals.
  5. Reactive – Use quick, on-the-spot strategies when stress hits.
    • Examples: taking a brief walk, listening to a favorite song, squeezing a stress ball.

Reflection & Self-Check

  1. Which category of coping strategies do you find most appealing? Why?

  2. From each category above, choose one strategy you’d like to try this week. Write it below:
    • Physical: ____________________________

    • Cognitive: ____________________________

    • Social: ____________________________

    • Proactive: ____________________________

    • Reactive: ____________________________

  3. Think of a recent academic stressor (e.g., upcoming test, big project). Describe the situation and identify which strategy you would use to cope.

  4. How will you remind yourself to use your chosen coping strategies when you feel stressed?

Use this overview alongside the Personal Coping Toolbox Template to build and customize your own set of strategies. Refer back to this handout whenever you need a refresher on healthy ways to handle stress or tough emotions. Good luck powering up your coping skills!
