Coping Mechanisms for Stressful Times

Practical Tools for Managing Stress and Building Resilience

Welcome students and introduce the lesson topic. Emphasize that today we will explore practical ways to manage stress during high-pressure times.

Today's Agenda

  • Introduction & Icebreaker (10 min)
  • Guided Mindfulness Exercise (10 min)
  • Group Discussion (10 min)
  • Creative Collage Activity (20 min)
  • Reflection & Closure (10 min)

Review the agenda so students know what to expect. Keep the pace moving to stay on time.

Lesson Objectives

• Understand the importance of coping mechanisms
• Practice a guided mindfulness exercise
• Explore emotions with the Emotion Wheel
• Create a personal coping collage
• Reflect on strategies to use this week

Explain each objective briefly. Connect objectives back to student experiences with stress.

Guided Mindfulness Exercise

  1. Sit comfortably and close your eyes
  2. Take 3 slow, deep breaths
  3. Inhale for 4 counts, hold 2, exhale 6
  4. Perform a head-to-toe body scan
  5. Notice tension and release it
  6. Gently open eyes when ready

Distribute the Guided Mindfulness Script handout. Lead the class through each step slowly, pausing for breaths and body awareness.

Understanding Emotions

• Identify 2–3 emotions you’ve felt during exam season
• Discuss coping strategies you’ve tried
• Be prepared to share insights with the class

Show the Emotion Wheel slide as a large image. Hand out printed Emotion Wheels. In pairs, have students identify feelings and coping strategies.

Creative Collage Activity

Use magazines, scissors, glue & paper to create a visual coping plan:
• Choose images/colors/symbols that represent strategies
• Title your collage with a personal coping mantra
• 15 minutes for creation

Explain the collage activity rules and model an example. Circulate to prompt deeper symbolism and support creativity.

Reflection & Next Steps

Write in your journal:
• Which coping mechanism will you practice this week?
• Why did you choose it?
Share one takeaway with the group

Distribute journals or paper. Give students 3–4 minutes to write, then invite volunteers. Reinforce that there’s no wrong answer.

Resources & Support

• School Counselor (Room 102) Mon–Fri, 10am–3pm
• Mental Health Hotline: 1-800-123-4567
• Mindfulness Apps: Calm, Headspace
• You don’t have to manage stress alone!

Close the lesson by summarizing key strategies. Remind students of on-campus and external support resources.

Activity

Coping Collage Activity Handout

Purpose

Create a visual representation of your personal coping plan. By selecting images, colors, and words that resonate with you, this collage will help you clarify and internalize strategies to manage stress.

Materials

  • Magazines or newspapers
  • Scissors
  • Glue sticks or liquid glue
  • Poster paper or large cardstock (one per student)
  • Colored markers or pens
  • Optional: stickers, washi tape, colored paper

Instructions

  1. Set Your Intention (2 minutes)
Reflect on one or two stressors you face (e.g., exams, deadlines, social pressures). Keep these in mind as you work.

  2. Select Images & Words (5 minutes)
Flip through magazines and cut out pictures, words, or colors that symbolize coping strategies (e.g., calm nature scenes for mindfulness, group photos for social support).

  3. Arrange Your Collage (3 minutes)
Lay out your cutouts on the poster paper. Think about placement:

    • Centerpiece: your core coping mantra or most important strategy
    • Surrounding elements: supporting techniques or reminders
  4. Glue & Embellish (5 minutes)
Once you’re happy with the layout, glue everything down. Use markers or stickers to add labels, titles, or decorative accents.

  5. Title Your Work (2 minutes)
At the top or center, write a personal coping mantra (e.g., “Breathe & Believe”).

  6. Clean Up (3 minutes)
Return unused materials to the supply area and clear your workspace.

Reflection Prompts

After completing your collage, respond to the following in your journal:

  • Which image or word in your collage best represents the strategy you’ll practice first? Why?

  • How might you use this coping plan next time you feel overwhelmed?

  • What new insight did you gain about your own stress responses while creating this collage?
