Cooperative Storytelling Extravaganza

Cooperative Play

In this lesson, children will engage in a cooperative storytelling activity where they take turns adding to a story. This activity will help develop their listening skills, creativity, and ability to work together as a team. Cooperative storytelling is an excellent way to practice giving and receiving ideas, fostering a sense of community and collaboration among the children.

Step 1

Introduction to Cooperative Play

10 mins

Gather the children in a circle and explain the concept of cooperative play. Discuss why it's important to work together and listen to each other's ideas. Introduce the activity: cooperative storytelling.

Step 2

Warm-Up Game: The Silly Sentence

10 mins

  • Start with a simple game to loosen up the children.
  • Begin a silly sentence, and go around the circle with each child adding one word to it.
  • Example: "Once" -> "upon" -> "a" -> "time" -> "a" -> "dragon" ->... and see where it leads.
  • Emphasize that any word is welcome, and there's no right or wrong way to play.

Step 3

Main Activity: Cooperative Storytelling

30 mins

  • Use the printable cards with story prompts to guide the storytelling.
  • Write the story on large paper or a whiteboard as it progresses.
  • Encourage each child to think of a sentence and listen carefully to what others add.
  • Adjust the prompts as needed to keep the story flowing and engaging.
  • Option: Create multiple smaller groups if the class size is large so that all have a chance to participate more frequently.

Step 4

Wrap-Up Discussion

10 mins

  • Discuss what they enjoyed about the activity and how it felt to hear everyone's ideas.
  • Ask questions like, "What was your favorite part of the story?" and "How did it feel to add to a story someone else started?"
  • Emphasize the skills of listening, accepting others' ideas, and working together to create something unique.
