Conversation Quest

Lesson Plan

Session 1 Lesson Plan

Introduce basic greetings and conversational turn-taking through modeling and guided role-play, building the student’s confidence to initiate and respond in simple social exchanges.

Basic greetings and turn-taking are foundational social skills that support meaningful interactions, confidence, and rapport building, especially for a Kindergartner on the autism spectrum who benefits from explicit, structured practice.

Slide Deck

Session 1: Greetings & Turn-Taking

Welcome the student and introduce today’s focus. Say: “Today we will learn greetings and how to take turns talking!” Point to images of two kids waving.

Warm-Up: Echo Game

• Teacher says “Hello”
• Student echoes “Hello”
• Repeat with enthusiasm!

Explain the echo game: “I will say ‘Hello,’ and you repeat it back to me. Ready?” Encourage smiling and eye contact.

Modeling Greetings

  1. Hello
  2. How are you?
  3. Nice to meet you

Model each phrase clearly. First say “Hello,” then have the student repeat. Continue with “How are you?” and “Nice to meet you.” Use speech bubbles or icons.

Guided Practice

• Draw a Greeting Card
• Say the phrase aloud
• Take turns for 1 minute each

Show a sample greeting card image. Explain: “We’ll draw a card, see the picture, and say the greeting. Then we switch!” Set the timer for 1-minute turns.

Cool-Down Reflection

• Circle: Easy or Hard?
• Draw: What you liked today

Hand out the reflection worksheet. Read each prompt: “Circle what was easy or hard. Draw your favorite part.” Provide help as needed.
