Define context clues simply. Emphasize that the surrounding words are like hints.

Clue Type 1: Synonyms

Words that Mean the Same!

  • A synonym clue uses a word or phrase that has a similar meaning to the unknown word.
  • Look for: or, commas, or words in parentheses.

Example: The ancient, archaic language was difficult to understand.

Introduce synonym clues. Provide a clear example and explain how 'or' or commas often signal them.

Clue Type 2: Antonyms

Words that Mean the Opposite!

  • An antonym clue uses a word or phrase that has an opposite meaning to the unknown word.
  • Look for: but, however, unlike, in contrast, instead of.

Example: Unlike his shy brother, Mark was gregarious.

Introduce antonym clues. Explain how contrasting words or phrases help define the unknown word.
