Community Circle Reconnect

Encourage empathy and connection

In this lesson, students will gather in a circle to share their holiday experiences and new year hopes. This open dialogue encourages empathy and understanding, providing students with a sense of connection and community as they reflect on shared experiences and future aspirations. This lesson is important as it helps students develop social-emotional skills, such as active listening and empathy, which are crucial for building a supportive classroom environment.

Step 1

Introduction

Step 2

Sharing Circle

15 minutes

  • Begin the circle by sharing your own holiday experience and a hope for the new year to model the activity.
  • Pass the talking stick around the circle, allowing each student to share their experiences and hopes.
  • Encourage students to listen actively and show empathy by nodding or smiling.

Step 3

Closure

5 minutes

  • Thank students for sharing and listening.
  • Reflect on the common themes or unique stories shared.
  • Discuss how these shared experiences can strengthen the classroom community.
