Community Role-Play Lines

Below are simple, kid-friendly dialogues for each community job role. Each student will read their lines in character and then ask the question at the end to engage classmates.


Teacher

  1. “Hello! I’m a Teacher. I help students learn to read, write, and explore new ideas.”
  2. “When you have a question, I guide you to find the answer.”
  3. Ask the group: “Can someone tell me their favorite thing they’ve learned in school?”



Firefighter

  1. “Hi there! I’m a Firefighter. I keep our community safe by putting out fires.”
  2. “I drive a big red fire truck and wear special gear to stay safe.”
  3. Ask the group: “What should I do if I see smoke in a building?”



Grocery Store Worker

  1. “Hello! I’m a Grocery Store Worker. I help stock shelves and check out customers.”
  2. “I make sure everyone finds the food they need to eat.”
  3. Ask the group: “What would you like to buy today?”



Nurse

  1. “Good day! I’m a Nurse. I take care of people when they’re sick or hurt.”
  2. “I check temperatures, give medicine, and help people feel better.”
  3. Ask the group: “If someone has a fever, what should I do to help them?”



Mail Carrier

  1. “Hi! I’m the Mail Carrier. I deliver letters and packages to people’s homes.”
  2. “I walk or drive my mail truck every day so families can stay connected.”

Bus Driver

  1. “Hello! I’m a Bus Driver. I pick up kids and take them safely to school and home.”
  2. “I follow a route and make sure everyone has a seat and wears a seatbelt.”

Librarian

  1. “Hi friends! I’m a Librarian. I find books and help you choose stories you love.”

Activity

Costume Corner

Description: A selection of simple costume pieces representing various community jobs that students can choose to help them step into character.

Objective: Students will select and wear costume items that help them embody their assigned community role during the role-play.

Materials (set up on a table labeled “Costume Corner”):

  • Firefighter helmet or hat
  • Teacher’s glasses and small chalkboard or pointer
  • Grocery apron or shopping bag
  • Nurse’s hat or stethoscope prop
  • Mail carrier bag or mail pouch
  • Bus driver cap or route map
  • Librarian glasses and a book prop
  • Police badge or hat

Instructions:

  1. Set Up Costume Corner (5 minutes)
    • Arrange all costume items on a table with clear labels for each job.
    • Make sure items are easy for 2nd graders to handle.
  2. Choose and Wear Costumes (5 minutes)
    • When roles are assigned, students browse the Costume Corner to find items that match their job.
    • Each student selects 1–2 pieces to help them get into character.
    • Teacher and aides assist any students who need help finding or putting on their items.
  3. Return Items (2 minutes)
    • After the role-play, guide students to carefully return their costume pieces to the correct spot in the Costume Corner.
