Lesson Plan

Community Champions Lesson Plan

Build autistic learners’ confidence and skills in navigating community settings through structured 30-minute sessions focused on real-life scenarios and social safety.

Many autistic students need explicit practice with social and safety cues in public environments. This lesson fosters independence, social understanding, and community awareness in a supportive small-group setting.

Audience

Autistic learners (Tier 2 small group)

Time

12 sessions, 30 minutes each

Approach

Structured warm-ups, discussions, activities, games, and cool-downs.

Materials

  • Community Map Worksheet, - Community Scenario Cards, - Role-Play Cards, - Neighborhood Bingo Game Board, - Daily Schedule Template, - Emotion and Choice Cards, - Props for role-play (fake money, phone, toy map), and - Markers or crayons

Prep

Preparation

  • Draw a random Community Scenario Card
  • Read the scenario aloud (e.g., “You’re at the bus stop and see a stranger offering help.”)
  • Ask guided questions: “What would you do?” “Who could you ask for help?”

Step 3

Hands-On Activity

10 minutes

  • Pair students and give each pair a Role-Play Card
  • Students act out the scenario, practicing greetings, asking for help, and safe choices
  • Teacher circulates to model appropriate language and social cues

Step 4

Game

5 minutes

  • Distribute Neighborhood Bingo Game Board

  3. Explore Choices
    • Question: “What would you do first?”
    • Follow-up: “Who could you ask for help?” “What safe choice could you make?”
  4. Check Feelings
    • Question: “How might you feel if this happened to you?”
    • Invite a student to hold up an Emotion and Choice Card that matches the feeling.
    • Follow-up: “What can you say or do to feel safer?”
  5. Discuss Safety Tips
    • Question: “What is one safety tip we’ve learned that applies here?”
    • Prompt: “Use words like ‘I need help from…’ or ‘Please stay with me until…’”
  6. Consider Alternatives
    • Question: “Is there another way to handle this situation?”
    • Follow-up: “What if you didn’t have a phone or money?”
  7. Wrap-Up Round

Game

Neighborhood Bingo

Type: Game
Time: 5–7 minutes
Materials: Printed bingo boards, markers or crayons

Objective

Reinforce recognition of community locations and safety strategies by marking off features called aloud.

Setup

  1. Give each student a copy of a bingo board.
  2. Provide each student with markers or crayons to mark squares.

How to Play

  1. The teacher calls out community features or safety prompts one at a time (e.g., “bus stop,” “pharmacy,” “crosswalk,” “I need help from a trusted adult”).
  2. If a student has that feature on their board, they mark it.
  3. The first student to mark five in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) calls out “Bingo!”
  4. The winner shares one safety tip or explains why that feature is important before the game ends.
