Colors of Our Cultures

Exploring and Appreciating Diverse Cultures

Welcome students! Introduce the lesson “Colors of Our Cultures.” Explain that over the next 35 minutes, they’ll explore cultural diversity through images, diagrams, and reflection.

Lesson Objectives

• Explore diverse cultural traditions and symbols
• Analyze the Cultural Diversity Spectrum Diagram
• Reflect on how culture shapes personal and group identities

Read the objectives aloud. Emphasize the importance of each goal and how students will work toward them.

Cultural Snapshot

Look closely at this image from our Culture Image Gallery. What traditions, symbols, or elements do you recognize?

Display a striking image from the Culture Image Gallery. Give students 1–2 minutes to observe silently.

Share Your Observations

• What cultural elements stood out to you?
• How might this image reflect beliefs or values?

Invite volunteers to share their observations. Guide a brief whole-class discussion (2–3 comments maximum each) to build engagement.

Cultural Diversity Spectrum

Click to display the Cultural Diversity Spectrum Diagram.

Bring up the Cultural Diversity Spectrum Diagram on the projector. Introduce the concept of a spectrum of cultural expressions.

Spectrum Segments Explained

• Heritage Practices (traditions, rituals)
• Artistic Expressions (music, art, dance)
• Social Customs (food, gatherings)
• Beliefs & Values (worldviews, ethics)

Explain each segment briefly: Heritage Practices, Artistic Expressions, Social Customs, Beliefs & Values. Pause after each to check comprehension.

Reflect & Write

Use the Culture Reflection Worksheet to explore:

  1. How do cultural traditions influence identity?
  2. Which spectrum segment reflects your background? Why?

Hand out the Culture Reflection Worksheet. Give students 5 minutes to write responses to prompt questions.

Pair Up & Discuss

• Share your key reflections with a partner
• Discuss similarities and differences in your cultural experiences

Ask students to pair up and share their written reflections. Circulate to listen, encourage deeper questions, and note interesting connections.

Key Insights

• What surprised you in your discussion?
• How did your partner’s perspective differ or align with yours?

Reconvene the class. Invite 3–4 volunteers to share insights from their partner discussions. Highlight themes of empathy and respect.

Keep Exploring!

Respect and learn from diverse cultures daily.
What step will you take next to broaden your cultural understanding?

Reading

Cultural Diversity Spectrum Diagram

This diagram organizes cultural elements into four interconnected segments along a continuum. As you explore each section, think of real–world examples— traditions, art, social practices, and beliefs—that you know or have experienced.

--- Heritage Practices --- Artistic Expressions --- Social Customs --- Beliefs & Values ---

SegmentWhat It Includes
Heritage Practices• Rituals and ceremonies passed down through generations
• Traditional clothing, language, and artifacts
• Family customs and regional celebrations
Artistic Expressions• Music, dance, theater, and visual arts
• Storytelling, poetry, and crafts
• Symbols and motifs that convey meaning
Social Customs• Food, festivals, and holiday gatherings
• Greeting rituals and etiquette
• Community events and social traditions
Beliefs & Values• Philosophies and worldviews
• Moral codes, ethics, and spiritual practices
• Attitudes, norms, and guiding principles

Use this spectrum to guide your group discussions:

  • Identify cultural examples you know for each segment.
    - Notice how these segments overlap and influence one another.
    - Reflect on which part of the spectrum resonates most with your own background.

(Refer back to this diagram during the Visual Exploration phase of the lesson.)
