Lesson Plan
Color Sequence Plan
Students will strengthen visual-spatial working memory by viewing sequences of colored shapes and accurately reproducing them on a worksheet, progressing from two to six shapes.
Improving visual-spatial working memory through structured practice boosts executive function, aids academic tasks like reading comprehension and math, and supports independent learning.
Audience
5th Grade Individual
Time
15 minutes
Approach
Demonstration, practice, feedback, and reflection.
Materials
Prep
Prepare Materials
5 minutes
- Open and review Shape Order Slides
- Print copies of Color Sequence Challenge and Color Sequence Key
- Familiarize yourself with sequence lengths and scaffolding levels
Step 1
Warm-Up
2 minutes
- Greet the student and explain today’s goal: strengthening memory through shapes
- Display a simple 3-shape sequence on Shape Order Slides
- Ask the student to verbally recall the order and celebrate effort
Step 2
Main Activity
10 minutes
- Explain that sequences will appear on Shape Order Slides and the student will recreate them on the Color Sequence Challenge
- Start with 2-shape sequences; after each display, the student reproduces it on the worksheet
- Gradually increase to 6 shapes as the student succeeds
- After each attempt, show the correct order using the Color Sequence Key for immediate feedback
Scaffolded Supports:
- If errors occur, replay the slide and encourage chunking (e.g., group shapes in pairs)
- Offer verbal reminders (“What was the third shape’s color?”)
- Allow the student to trace shapes on a separate sheet before writing
Step 3
Debrief
3 minutes
- Ask which strategies (e.g., chunking, visual imagery) helped most
- Discuss how these strategies apply to school tasks (e.g., remembering steps in math)
- Encourage the student to practice at home by visualizing small groups of shapes
Slide Deck
Shape Order Challenge
Strengthen your visual‐spatial memory by recalling and reproducing sequences of colored shapes.
Welcome the student and introduce the activity: “Today we’re going to play the Shape Order Challenge to boost your memory. You’ll see colored shapes in a sequence, then you’ll reproduce them on your worksheet.”
How to Play
- Watch the sequence of shapes carefully.
- Try to remember the exact order.
- Recreate the sequence on your worksheet.
Explain the steps clearly before beginning. Emphasize focus and encourage the student to look for patterns or groupings.
Sequence: 2 Shapes
[Circle – Color #F8E71C] [Square – Color #D4C21A]
Display for about 4–5 seconds. Then hide and prompt the student to copy the sequence.
Sequence: 3 Shapes
[Triangle – #F8E71C] [Circle – #D4C21A] [Square – #A99716]
Display for about 5–7 seconds. Prompt recall when hidden.
Sequence: 4 Shapes
[Square – #F8E71C] [Triangle – #D4C21A] [Circle – #A99716] [Hexagon – #F8E71C]
Display for about 7–8 seconds. Encourage chunking (e.g., first two, then next two shapes).
Sequence: 5 Shapes
[Circle – #F8E71C] [Square – #D4C21A] [Triangle – #A99716] [Diamond – #F8E71C] [Star – #D4C21A]
Display for about 8–10 seconds. Prompt verbal rehearsal if needed.
Sequence: 6 Shapes
[Star – #F8E71C] [Hexagon – #D4C21A] [Circle – #A99716] [Square – #F8E71C] [Triangle – #D4C21A] [Diamond – #A99716]
Display for about 10 seconds. Suggest chunking into pairs and a single leftover.
Bonus: 6-Shape Mix
[Diamond – #D4C21A] [Triangle – #F8E71C] [Square – #A99716] [Circle – #D4C21A] [Star – #F8E71C] [Hexagon – #A99716]
For a final challenge, display longer to boost difficulty. Ask the student to note any strategy used.

Color Sequence Challenge
Instructions:
Watch each sequence on the Shape Order Slides. Then, in the blanks below, draw the shapes in the same order and color them exactly as shown. Use the outline boxes to guide your drawing. If you get stuck, try grouping shapes into smaller chunks (for example, first two shapes, then the next two).

Bonus Challenge: 6-Shape Mix
Draw and color the six shapes in the order shown in the bonus slide. Use the space below:
Memory Tip: Break the sequence into smaller chunks (e.g., group shapes 1–3, then 4–6) to help you remember the order.
Answer Key
Color Sequence Key
This answer key provides the correct shapes and colors for each sequence, along with a brief explanation of how each answer is derived from the slides.
