Clouds of Concern

Slide Deck

Peer Pressure Signals

Welcome! Today we’ll explore how peer pressure shows up, especially around vaping, and begin to recognize the signals so you can make choices that feel right for you.

Slide 1: Introduce the session and build rapport. Emphasize confidentiality and encourage honest reflection.

What Is Peer Pressure?

Peer pressure is when people your age influence you to think or act in certain ways. It can be:
• Direct (“Come on, take a puff!”)
• Indirect (seeing friends vape and feeling you should too)
• Situational (fear of missing out at a party)

Slide 2: Define peer pressure in simple terms and connect to everyday life.

Types of Peer Pressure

  1. Direct Pressure: When someone explicitly asks or dares you.
  2. Indirect Pressure: When you feel the group’s vibe without anyone saying anything.
  3. Situational Pressure: When the environment (social media, parties) makes vaping seem normal.

Slide 3: Walk through each type, using hand gestures or examples from students’ lives.

Vaping Scenarios—Spot the Signal

Scenario A: Your friend holds out a vape and says, “Don’t be lame, try it!”
Scenario B: You scroll through stories showing classmates vaping and getting cheers.

Question: Which type of pressure is each scenario? How might you feel?

Slide 4: Present two short scenarios. Invite the student to identify the pressure type.

Reflection: Recognize Your Signals

Take a moment to think about a time you felt pressured.
• What happened?
• How did you feel physically and emotionally?
• What signals did you notice in others or in yourself?

Slide 5: Guide the student to write or say their answers. Emphasize reflection over right/wrong.

Next Steps

You’ve identified pressure signals. Next, we’ll use the Pressure vs. Power Journal to dig deeper and then create a personalized Coping Plan to stay in control.

Slide 6: Preview the next components and encourage a positive mindset.

Worksheet

Pressure vs. Power Journal

In this journal, you’ll practice noticing when you feel pressured versus when you feel powerful in social situations—especially around vaping.
Refer back to what you learned in Peer Pressure Signals as you work through these prompts.

1. Recognizing Pressure Signals

Think of a recent moment when you felt pressured to vape (directly, indirectly, or situationally).
• What happened?
• What signals did you notice in yourself or others?
• How did your body and mind react?

2. Remembering Your Power

Recall a time you chose to say “no” or walked away from a situation you didn’t feel comfortable with.
• What did you do or say?
• How did you feel afterward (physically and emotionally)?

3. Comparing Your Experiences

Describe one key difference between how you felt during the pressured moment versus when you felt empowered.

4. Scenario Practice

Read each scenario and complete the two columns:

ScenarioPower Response
A: Your friend holds out a vape and says, “Come on, don’t be such a wimp!”• Type of pressure: ____________

• My power response: _________________________________

B: You see classmates posting vape tricks on social media with likes and comments buzzing.• Type of pressure: ____________

• My power response: _________________________________

5. Building Your Power Phrases

Write three personal statements you can use to stand your ground when you feel pressured.

  1. ________________________________________________________

  2. ________________________________________________________

  3. ________________________________________________________

Next, you’ll transform these insights into actions in your personalized My Coping Plan.

Journal

My Coping Plan

In this journal, you’ll use what you learned in Peer Pressure Signals and the Pressure vs. Power Journal to set clear goals, pick coping strategies, and make an action plan for handling vaping pressure.

1. Set Your Personal Goal

Write one specific, realistic goal for how you will respond next time you feel pressured to vape. A good goal is clear and measurable. For example: “When a friend offers me a vape, I will use my power phrase and walk away.”

My Vaping Prevention Goal:
__________________________________________________________

2. Identify Your Support Team

List three people or resources you can turn to when you feel pressured. Describe how each can help you stay strong.

  1. __________________________ – __________________________________________________

  2. __________________________ – __________________________________________________

  3. __________________________ – __________________________________________________

3. Choose Your Coping Strategies

Think about moments you felt empowered in the Pressure vs. Power Journal and other healthy strategies you can try. Pick two or three and describe how you will use them.

Strategy 1: __________________________
How I’ll use it: ____________________________________________________________

Strategy 2: __________________________
How I’ll use it: ____________________________________________________________

Strategy 3: __________________________
How I’ll use it: ____________________________________________________________

4. Plan Your Action Steps

Create an “If–Then” plan for at least two situations.

SituationMy If–Then Plan
A: A friend offers me a vape at a party. If a friend offers me a vape, then I will _______________, say “No thanks,” and _______________.

B: I see classmates vaping in social media posts. If I feel tempted by social media, then I will _______________, remind myself of my goal, and _______________.

5. Visualize Success

Imagine how you will feel once you’ve followed your plan. Describe or sketch the scene in words. What do you see? How do you feel? What’s different about this moment?

__________________________________________________________

6. Track & Reflect

Choose a date this week to check in on your progress. Write down:
• Date of check-in: ____________

• What worked well?
__________________________________________________________

• What could I improve?
__________________________________________________________

7. My Commitment Pledge

Write a promise to yourself about staying in control when it comes to vaping. Sign and date it.

“I promise to stand by my goal and use my strategies to stay true to myself.”

Signature: __________________________ Date: ________________

Great work! Keep this plan handy and revisit it whenever you need a confidence boost. You’ve got the power!
