Classroom Crew: Our Expectation Adventure!

Let's discover how we can make our classroom the best place to learn and grow!

Welcome students to the lesson. Get them excited about creating a great classroom together.

1. Listen Carefully

  • Ears are open for learning!
  • Eyes are watching the speaker.
  • Bodies are calm and ready.

Ask students: 'What does it mean to listen carefully? Why is it important?' Emphasize whole-body listening.

2. Raise Your Hand

  • Wait for your turn to speak.
  • Everyone gets a chance to share!
  • It helps everyone hear each other.

Ask students: 'Why do we raise our hands? What happens if everyone talks at once?' Discuss taking turns.

3. Be Respectful

  • Use kind words and actions.
  • Take care of our classroom and supplies.
  • Value everyone's ideas and feelings.

Ask students: 'What does it mean to be respectful? How do we show respect to our friends and teachers?' Discuss kind words and actions.

4. Walk & Work Safely

  • Keep our bodies and objects safe.
  • Use walking feet inside.
  • Keep hands and feet to ourselves.

Ask students: 'What does it look like to walk safely in the classroom? Why is it important to move slowly?' Discuss inside voices and walking feet.

5. Always Try Your Best!

  • Give every task your super effort!
  • It's okay to make mistakes – that's how we learn!
  • Ask for help when you need it.

Ask students: 'Why is it good to try your best? What can you do if something is hard?' Encourage effort and asking for help.

Our Classroom Crew Rocks!

When we all follow these expectations, our classroom is a fantastic place for everyone to learn and grow together!

Script

Teacher Script: Classroom Crew: Our Expectation Adventure!

Warm-Up: Think About Our Classroom (5 minutes)

Teacher: "Good morning, Classroom Crew! Today, we're going on an adventure to make our classroom the best it can be. To start, I want you to close your eyes for a moment and imagine our classroom when everyone is learning, playing kindly, and having fun. What does it look like? What does it sound like? What does it feel like?"

Teacher: "Open your eyes! Who would like to share one thing they imagined? What helps our classroom be such a wonderful place?"

(Listen to a few student responses, guiding them towards ideas related to behavior and respect. Acknowledge and affirm their contributions.)

Exploring Expectations (10 minutes)

Teacher: "Those are fantastic ideas! Just like any great adventure crew, we need some important guidelines to help us work and play together safely and happily. Let's look at our Classroom Crew Slide Deck to review some of these expectations."

(Advance to the first expectation slide: "1. Listen Carefully")

Teacher: "Our first expectation is: Listen Carefully. What does it mean to listen carefully in our classroom? What does that look like? What does it sound like?"

(Allow students to share. Prompt them: "Are your ears open? Are your eyes watching? Is your body calm?")

Teacher: "Why is listening so important for learning and for our friends?"

(Repeat this process for each expectation on the Classroom Crew Slide Deck:

  • 2. Raise Your Hand: "Why do we raise our hands? What happens if everyone talks at once?"
  • 3. Be Respectful: "How do we show respect to our friends? To our teachers? To our classroom materials?"
  • 4. Walk & Work Safely: "What does it mean to be safe in our classroom? What kind of feet do we use inside? How do we use our materials safely?"
  • 5. Always Try Your Best!: "Why is it important to try your best, even if something is tricky? What can you do if you need help?")*

My Classroom Promise (10 minutes)

Teacher: "You all have such wonderful ideas about how to be a great part of our classroom crew! Now, you get to make your very own promise. I'm going to give you a My Classroom Promise Worksheet. On this worksheet, I want you to draw a picture or write a sentence about one expectation you will try your very best to follow. It could be listening, raising your hand, being respectful, working safely, or trying your best!"

(Distribute the My Classroom Promise Worksheet. Circulate and provide support as students work.)

Share and Reflect (5 minutes)

Teacher: "Wow, I see so many thoughtful promises! Who would like to share their promise with our Classroom Crew?"

(Invite a few volunteers to share their worksheet and explain their promise.)

Teacher: "Thank you, everyone! When we all work together, listen to each other, show respect, and try our best, our classroom becomes a truly amazing place for everyone to learn and grow. I know our Classroom Crew is going to have an incredible year!"
