Students will be able to identify and demonstrate positive classroom behaviors that contribute to a respectful and productive learning environment.

Understanding and practicing good classroom behavior helps everyone learn better, feel safe, and work together effectively. This lesson will help students navigate classroom expectations confidently.

Audience

6th Grade Non-Native English Speakers

Time

50 minutes

Approach

Interactive discussion, engaging activities, and practical application.

Materials

Prep

Prepare Materials

15 minutes

Review the Classroom Crew Code Slide Deck and familiarize yourself with the content.
Print and cut out the Behavior Charades Game Cards.
Print enough copies of the Behavior Bingo Worksheet for each student.
Ensure a whiteboard or projector is available.

Step 1

Warm-Up: What Does Good Learning Look Like?

5 minutes

Display the first slide of the Classroom Crew Code Slide Deck.
Ask students to think about a time they learned something really well. What did the classroom look, sound, and feel like?
Facilitate a brief whole-class discussion, encouraging students to share their ideas in simple sentences. Write down keywords on the board.

Step 2

Introduce the Classroom Crew Code

10 minutes

Present the Classroom Crew Code Slide Deck (slides 2-4).
Explain that a 'crew code' is like a set of rules for working well together.
Go through each behavior (e.g., listening, respecting, participating, being prepared), providing simple explanations and examples.
Use visuals on the slides to support understanding.

Step 3

Discussion: Why Do We Need This Code?

10 minutes

Transition to the Classroom Crew Code Discussion.
Divide students into small groups (3-4 students, mix language levels if possible).
Provide each group with a discussion prompt from the discussion guide, such as 'What happens if no one listens?' or 'Why is it important to respect others' ideas?'
Allow 5 minutes for group discussion, then bring the class back together to share key points. Encourage speaking in short, clear sentences.

Step 4

Game: Behavior Charades

15 minutes

Introduce the Behavior Charades Game.
Explain the rules: one student acts out a classroom behavior (positive or negative) without speaking, and others guess.
Use the Behavior Charades Game Cards.
Emphasize observing body language and facial expressions.
Play several rounds, ensuring everyone has a chance to participate and guess. Correctly identified positive behaviors can be praised.

Step 5

Activity: Behavior Bingo Worksheet

8 minutes

Distribute the Behavior Bingo Worksheet.
Explain that students will mark off squares when they see or perform a positive behavior. This can be started today and continued throughout the week.
Briefly review the behaviors listed on the worksheet.
Encourage students to try and get a 'bingo' by the end of the day/week. Collect at the end of class for a quick check or just use as a personal reminder.

Step 6

Cool-Down: One Word Reflection

2 minutes

Ask students to think of one word that describes how they will contribute to the 'Classroom Crew Code' tomorrow.
Allow students to share their words aloud or write them on an exit ticket.
Reinforce the idea that everyone plays a part in a great classroom.

Welcome to Our Classroom Crew!

What makes a classroom awesome for learning?

Welcome students and set a positive tone. Ask them to think about what makes a classroom a great place to learn.

Our Classroom Crew Code

Why do we need rules in our classroom?
To help everyone learn and feel safe!
This is our plan to work together well.

Introduce the idea of a 'crew code' - like rules for working well as a team. Explain that good behavior helps everyone.

Code #1: Be an Active Listener

Eyes on the speaker 👀
Ears open to hear 👂
Quiet body, ready to learn 🧘

Explain 'Active Listening.' Emphasize looking at the speaker, keeping hands still, and thinking about what is said. Use simple language and gestures.

Code #2: Speak with Respect

Use kind words 😊
Raise your hand to speak ✋
Listen to different ideas 🧠

Discuss 'Respectful Communication.' Talk about using kind words, waiting for your turn, and valuing different ideas. Give examples of respectful and disrespectful communication.

Code #3: Participate Responsibly

Join in and help your team! 🤝
Ask questions if you don't understand 🤔
Always try your best! ✨

Introduce 'Responsible Participation.' Explain contributing to group work, asking questions, and trying your best. Encourage all students to participate.

Code #4: Be Prepared

Have your pencil and books ready ✏️📚
Finish your homework at home 🏠
Be in your seat when class starts ⏰

Explain 'Being Prepared.' Discuss having materials ready, homework done, and being on time. Connect this to smooth class transitions.

We Are a Team!

Everyone helps make our classroom amazing! 🌟
Let's follow our Crew Code every day. 🎉

Conclude with a reminder that everyone is a part of the 'crew' and helps make the classroom a great place. Reinforce the positive impact of their actions.
