Circle of Strength Lesson Plan

Lead a 30-minute group session to help 10th graders recognize personal strengths, practice coping strategies, and build peer support through guided discussions and interactive activities.

This session fosters self-awareness and positive peer connections, promoting healthier coping skills and reducing challenging behaviors. It builds emotional resilience and a supportive classroom community.

Welcome to our group session!

Let’s work together to recognize our strengths and support each other.

Welcome students and set a positive tone. Introduce the session name and focus. Remind them of group guidelines (respect, confidentiality, active listening).

Session Objectives

By the end of today, you will:

• Identify two personal strengths you already use
• Practice coping strategies for stress
• Share and learn from peers’ experiences

Briefly walk through each objective so students know the purpose and flow. Encourage engagement.

Warm-Up Discussion (5 min)

  1. Icebreaker Question:
    “What’s one personal strength you used this week?”
  2. Volunteer shares briefly
  3. Celebrate and acknowledge each contribution

Explain the icebreaker. Model an example strength you used. Invite each student to share one strength with the group.

Check-In Circle (5 min)

• Go around and name your current mood in one word
• Teacher notes common themes on the whiteboard
• Focus on listening and respect

Guide students to use one-word mood descriptors. Note patterns on the board without judgment. Reinforce active listening.

Strengths Identification (8 min)

  1. In pairs, brainstorm:
    • Two personal strengths
    • One example of using each
  2. Post ideas on chart paper around the room
  3. Gallery walk: write supportive comments next to peers’ strengths

Explain instructions clearly. Monitor pairs, prompt deeper discussion if needed. After 6 minutes, guide gallery walk and encourage supportive comments.

Coping Skills Scenarios (7 min)

  1. Small groups pick a Coping Skills Scenario Card
  2. Discuss a healthy coping response
  3. Each group shares their scenario and strategy
  4. Teacher highlights effective approaches

Hand out the scenario cards. Circulate among groups to ensure all voices are heard. After group sharing, highlight strategies on the anchor poster.

Reflection & Goal Setting (5 min)

  1. Complete Reflection Worksheet:
    • Which strength will I use this week?
    • How will I cope if stressed?
  2. Volunteers share one takeaway

Distribute reflection worksheets. Give students time to write. Ask for volunteers to share. Reinforce that they can use peer support all week.

Use these cards in small groups to discuss and practice healthy coping strategies. Read the scenario, talk through how you might respond, and note a specific coping skill you’d use below each one.

You have a big exam tomorrow and feel overwhelmed and unprepared. Your heart is racing and you’re having trouble focusing on your notes.

Mood Check-In

Objective: Quickly gauge the group’s emotional state and build a safe space for sharing.

Time: 5 minutes

Materials Needed:

  • None (optional: whiteboard or sticky notes)

Instructions

  1. Form a Circle (1 min)
    • Have students stand or sit in a circle to promote inclusion and visibility.
  2. One-Word Mood Check (2 min)
    • Going around the circle, each student names one word that describes how they’re feeling right now (e.g., “focused,” “tired,” “anxious,” “hopeful”).
    • No explanations are required—just the word.
  3. Optional Brief Share (1 min)
    • Invite any student who wants to elaborate on their mood word to share a sentence or two about why they chose it.
  4. Group Reflection (1 min)
    • Teacher briefly notes common themes (e.g., many feeling “stressed”) without judgment.
    • Reinforce that all feelings are valid and this helps the group support one another.

Teacher Notes

  • Model vulnerability by sharing your own one-word mood first.
  • Encourage respect and confidentiality: what’s shared in the circle stays in the circle.
  • Watch for students who seem uncomfortable; offer a reminder that sharing is optional.
