Slide Deck

Choice Detectives

Welcome, little detectives! Today we're going to learn how to make good choices by looking at pros and cons.

Welcome students! Introduce yourself as their guide today and get them excited about becoming Choice Detectives.

What is a Choice Detective?

A Choice Detective looks for pros (good things) and cons (not-so-good things) when making a choice.

Explain that a Choice Detective is someone who looks for the good and not-so-good things before choosing.

Pros & Cons Chart

Choice Chart

Option A:
Pros | Cons

Option B:
Pros | Cons

Draw this blank chart on your whiteboard. Point out the two columns and how students will use them.

Modeling: Indoor vs. Outdoor Play

Indoor Play
• Pros: Fun with toys, stay warm
• Cons: Less fresh air

Outdoor Play
• Pros: Fresh air, lots of space
• Cons: Might get muddy

Model filling in the chart by thinking aloud. Ask students to help you list the pros and cons.

Your Turn to Practice!

Get your Choice Chart Template.

Listen to the scenario.
Draw or write one pro and one con for each option.

Hand out the Choice Chart Template (#choice-chart-template). Read the scenario and guide students as they fill in one pro and one con per option.

Share & Reflect

Who wants to share their chart?
How did it help you decide which option you liked best?

Invite a few volunteers to present. Ask reflection questions to reinforce how the chart helped them decide.

Great Job, Detectives!

You practiced thinking ahead and making good choices.
Keep using your Choice Chart every day!

Praise students for their thoughtful work. Encourage them to use the Choice Chart in everyday decisions.

  2. Block Tower vs. Puzzle
  3. Slide vs. Swing
  4. Storytime vs. Coloring
  5. Ball Play vs. Jump Rope
  6. Painting vs. Playdough

Teacher Tip: Shuffle cards and let each child pick one. Encourage them to think like Choice Detectives by asking: “What’s good about this? What might be tricky?”

Extension: After filling charts, invite students to share which option they picked and why.

Warm Up

Choice Warm-Up

Time: 5 minutes

Get ready to be Choice Detectives! We’ll play a quick “This or That?” survey to warm up our decision-making skills.

1. Choose Your Side

  • Say two simple choices (e.g., “Apple vs. Banana”).
  • Point to one side of the room for Option A and the other side for Option B.
  • On “Go!”, students move to the side they prefer.

2. Quick Pro Share

  • Once in their spot, each student turns to a neighbor and shares one good thing (a pro) about why they picked that option.

3. Repeat with New Pair

  • Call out a new pair of choices (e.g., “Slide vs. Swing”).
  • Repeat Steps 1–2.

Teacher Tip: Model one round by sharing your own pro aloud (e.g., “I chose banana because it’s easy to peel!”).

This fast-moving warm-up gets everyone thinking about pros for different options—just like real Choice Detectives!
