Creating a Calming Environment
Students will learn simple ways to feel calm by noticing how their surroundings make them feel and practicing fun, relaxing activities.
When students understand how their feelings change with their surroundings, they can use simple techniques to feel happier and more relaxed.
Kindergarten to 2nd Grade
Fun, visual, and interactive activities with lots of movement and pictures.
Step 1
Introduction and Discussion
5 minutes
- Start with a simple talk about what makes us feel happy or calm. Use pictures if needed.
- Ask the children to point out parts of the room that look calm or fun.
- Explain that our feelings can change with our space.
Step 2
Sensory Activity
10 minutes
- Show slides from Sensory Relaxation Techniques with lots of pictures and simple words.
- Lead the children through an easy breathing exercise and gentle stretch (using fun, simple moves).
- Ask the children how they feel during the exercise, using happy or calm faces as prompts.
Step 3
Design Your Chill Space Activity
5 minutes
- Give each child paper and crayons for the Design Your Chill Space activity.
- Ask them to draw a little picture of a place that makes them feel calm or happy.
- Let a few children share their drawings with the class in a supportive, fun way.
