Guide a 6th grader through a daily 20-minute structured check-in to identify and record emotions, reflect on recent behavior, set a specific goal, and journal deeper feelings to build self-awareness and positive habits.

Consistent self-reflection and goal-setting help students notice behavior patterns, practice emotional regulation, and embrace incremental growth with immediate feedback and support.

Step 1

Introduction & Mood Rating

3 minutes

  • Greet the student warmly and explain the purpose of today’s check-in
  • Ask the student to identify and circle their current mood on the Daily Check-In Sheet
  • Briefly discuss why recognizing emotions supports better choices

Step 2

Guided Reflection

7 minutes

  • Use the Guided Check-In Questions script to prompt discussion:
    • "What went well yesterday?"
    • "Was there anything challenging?"
    • "How did you handle your feelings?"
  • Encourage elaboration and listen actively to validate their experiences

Step 3

Set Behavioral Goal

5 minutes

  • Guide the student to choose one specific positive behavior to focus on today
  • Have them write this goal clearly on the Daily Check-In Sheet
  • Discuss simple strategies or supports they’ll use to meet this goal

Step 4

Deep Reflection & Closing

5 minutes

  • Provide the Emotion Reflection Pages for journaling prompts:
    • "Why do you feel this way?"
    • "What could you do differently next time?"
  • Offer positive feedback, affirm their goal, and remind them how you’ll review progress tomorrow

Guided Check-In Questions Script

Teacher: "Now that you’ve identified how you’re feeling, let’s talk about how yesterday went. I’m going to ask you a few questions—feel free to share as much as you’d like."

1. What went well yesterday?

Teacher: "What is one thing that went well for you yesterday? It could be something you did in class, on the playground, or at home."

Follow-up Prompts:

  • "That sounds awesome! Can you tell me more about that moment?"
  • "How did you feel when that happened?"

2. Was there anything challenging?

Teacher: "Was there anything that felt hard or tricky for you yesterday?"

Follow-up Prompts:

  • "What made that part challenging for you?"
  • "How did your body feel when you were dealing with that?"

3. How did you handle your feelings or reactions?
