Slide Deck

Welcome, Chatting Champs!

Today we're going to learn how to be amazing at talking to our friends!

Welcome students and introduce the idea of learning how to talk to each other.

What's a Conversation?

It's like playing catch, but with words!

  • One person talks
  • The other person listens
  • Then the other person talks!

Explain what a conversation is in simple terms. Use the analogy of 'playing catch with words'.

Chatting Champ Rules!

  1. Say Hello!
  2. Take Turns Talking!
  3. Say Goodbye!

Introduce the three main rules. You can use gestures for each rule: hand wave for hello, pointing back and forth for turns, waving goodbye for goodbye.

Rule #1: Say Hello!

How do we start a conversation?

  • "Hi!"
  • "Hello!"
  • "Good morning!"
  • A friendly wave!

Focus on the 'Say Hello' rule. Ask students for different ways to greet someone.

Rule #2: Take Turns Talking!

When someone is talking, you listen.

When they stop, it's your turn to talk!

  • No interrupting!
  • Listen with your ears and eyes!

Explain turn-taking clearly. Emphasize listening. This is where the 'playing catch' analogy is important.

Rule #3: Say Goodbye!

How do we end a conversation?

  • "See you later!"
  • "It was nice talking to you!"
  • "Bye!"
  • A friendly wave!

Explain how to end a conversation nicely. Ask students for examples.

You're a Chatting Champ!

Remember our rules!

Let's practice being Chatting Champs!

Recap the rules and encourage practice. This slide leads into the activity.

Chatting Champs Script

Warm-Up: Greeting Game (5 minutes)

Teacher: "Good morning, everyone! Today, we're going to talk about something super fun and important: how to be amazing at talking to our friends! Who can tell me one way to say 'hello' to someone?"

(Allow a few students to share. Encourage variety: waving, saying 'hi', 'good morning', etc.)

Teacher: "Great ideas! We say hello to start a conversation, right? Let's play a quick game. I want you to find a partner near you. When I say 'go', you'll practice saying hello to your partner in a friendly way. You can wave, say 'hi', or use your words. Ready? Go!"

(Give students a minute to greet each other. Circulate and observe.)

Teacher: "Wonderful! Everyone is so good at saying hello! Give yourselves a pat on the back."

Introduction to Chatting Champs (5 minutes)

Teacher: (Display Chatting Champs Slide Deck - Slide 1)

"Today, we're going to become 'Chatting Champs'! A Chatting Champ knows how to have great conversations. Do you know what a conversation is?"

(Allow students to share ideas.)

Teacher: (Display Chatting Champs Slide Deck - Slide 2)

"A conversation is like playing catch with words! When you play catch, one person throws the ball, and the other person catches it, right?"

(Wait for affirmation.)

Teacher: "Well, in a conversation, one person 'throws' some words, and the other person 'catches' them by listening. Then, it's their turn to 'throw' some words back! It goes back and forth. We don't want to throw all the balls ourselves, and we don't want to never throw the ball, do we? We take turns!

(Display Chatting Champs Slide Deck - Slide 3)

"To be a super Chatting Champ, we have three simple rules. Can you say them with me?"

  • "Rule #1: Say Hello!"
  • "Rule #2: Take Turns Talking!"
  • "Rule #3: Say Goodbye!"

Modeling and Role-Playing (10 minutes)

Teacher: (Display Chatting Champs Slide Deck - Slide 4)

"Let's look at our first rule: Say Hello! How do we start a conversation? We greet people! We can say 'Hi!', 'Hello!', 'Good morning!', or even just a friendly wave. It lets people know you want to talk to them."

Teacher: (Display Chatting Champs Slide Deck - Slide 5)

"Now for our most important rule for playing catch with words: Take Turns Talking! When someone else is talking, what should our mouths be doing?" (Wait for responses like 'closed' or 'listening'). "That's right! When someone is talking, we listen with our ears and our eyes. When they stop talking, then it's our turn to share our words. We don't interrupt, and we don't hog all the talking time!"

Teacher: (Display Chatting Champs Slide Deck - Slide 6)

"And finally, when it's time to stop talking, we use Rule #3: Say Goodbye! We can say 'See you later!', 'It was nice talking to you!', or just 'Bye!'. It's polite to let someone know the conversation is ending."

Teacher: "I need a volunteer to help me show everyone how to be a Chatting Champ!"

(Choose a student volunteer. Model a short, simple conversation using the rules. For example:)

Teacher: "Hi [Student's Name]! How are you today?"

Student: (Responds)

Teacher: "Oh, that's interesting! I like [something related to their response]."

Student: (Responds)

Teacher: "Well, it was really nice chatting with you! See you later!"

Student: (Responds)

Teacher: "Okay, now it's your turn to practice! I'm going to give you some fun Conversation Starters Activity ideas. Find your partner again, and try to have a conversation using our three rules. Remember: say hello, take turns, and say goodbye! I'll be walking around to hear your amazing conversations!"

(Circulate, listen to conversations, and offer gentle guidance and positive reinforcement. Prompt students who are struggling with turn-taking or initiating/ending.)

Worksheet: How to Be a Chatting Champ (5 minutes)

Teacher: "You all did a fantastic job practicing! Now, let's think about what we learned. I'm going to give you a How to Be a Chatting Champ Worksheet. On this worksheet, I want you to draw a picture or try to write one thing you learned today about being a Chatting Champ. What's one important rule or idea?"

(Distribute worksheets and writing tools. Provide support as needed.)

Teacher: "If you finish early, you can show your drawing to your partner and explain what you drew!"

Cool-Down: Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down (5 minutes)

Teacher: (Display Chatting Champs Cool Down)

"Alright, Chatting Champs! Let's do a quick 'Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down' to show what we remember. Give me a thumbs up if the answer is yes, and thumbs down if the answer is no."

  1. "Should you say hello when you start talking to someone?" (Thumbs Up)
  2. "Is it okay to interrupt your friend when they are telling you about their toy?" (Thumbs Down)
  3. "Should you listen when your friend is talking?" (Thumbs Up)
  4. "When you're done talking, should you just walk away without saying anything?" (Thumbs Down)
  5. "Are you a Chatting Champ?" (Thumbs Up!)

Teacher: "Amazing job, everyone! You are all fantastic Chatting Champs. Remember to use these skills when you talk to your friends and family! Great work today!"
