Group Challenge Tasks
Activity Overview
In this activity, students will work together in small groups to complete a series of tasks that challenge them to think creatively, problem-solve, and support one another. The tasks are designed to illustrate the growth mindset by encouraging students to see challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. Each task is meant to build resilience, teamwork, and persistence.
Task 1: The Tower Challenge
Objective: Build the tallest tower possible using limited materials (e.g., paper cups, straws, tape, etc.).
Instructions:
- Give each group a set of materials.
- Ask groups to plan their design before they begin construction.
- Encourage them to discuss and adjust their strategy as they build.
Task 2: The Puzzle Race
Objective: Solve a jigsaw puzzle or a series of puzzle pieces that the teacher has prepared in advance.
Instructions:
- Provide each group with a puzzle.
- Ensure the puzzle requires collaboration and communication.
- Encourage groups to delegate roles (e.g., sorting pieces, assembling sections) to quickly complete the puzzle.
Task 3: Problem-Solving Relay
Objective: Complete a relay race with problem-solving stations.
Instructions:
- Set up several stations around the classroom; each station has a simple problem or riddle related to a growth mindset (e.g., "What should you do when you make a mistake?" or "List three ways to overcome a challenge.").
- Groups rotate through stations, collaborating on each challenge.
Group Instructions & Guidelines
- Work together by listening to each member's ideas.
- Try new strategies if your first approach doesn't work.
- Remember, mistakes are opportunities to learn; discuss and reflect on what could be improved in the team’s approach.
Reflection
After completing the tasks, regroup as a class to discuss:
- What strategies helped your group the most?
- How did your group overcome difficulties?
- What did you learn about working together and approaching challenges with a growth mindset?
This activity is designed to be both fun and educational, pushing you to think outside the box and work as a team to succeed!
Discussion
