Slide Deck

Cell City Showdown

Welcome to Cell City Showdown!
Today we’ll explore how cell organelles function just like parts of a city.

Welcome students and introduce the lesson. Emphasize that cells are like tiny cities, each part has a role. Briefly outline today’s objectives.

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
• Identify major cell organelles
• Match each organelle to a city counterpart
• Describe each organelle’s function using the Cell City analogy

Read aloud the objectives. Ensure students understand the goals: matching organelles to city parts and explaining their roles.

What Makes a City Run?

Think about a city you know. What keeps it running smoothly?
• Power stations
• Government buildings
• Transport networks
• Factories and services

Hook students by asking what keeps a city running. Capture answers on the board.

City ↔ Cell

Just like a city has parts that work together, a cell has organelles that cooperate:
• City Center = Nucleus
• Power Plants = Mitochondria
• …and more!

Draw a simple city map next to a cell diagram. Explain that we’ll pair each organelle with a city part.

Nucleus = City Hall

• Controls cell activities, stores DNA
• Like City Hall: makes decisions, holds records
Image: Nucleus labeled in cell alongside City Hall illustration

Introduce the nucleus. Emphasize control center function. Ask: What decisions happen at City Hall?

Mitochondria = Power Plant

• Produces ATP (cellular energy)
• Like a power plant: generates electricity for the city
Image: Mitochondrion next to power plant photo

Explain mitochondria as the energy producers. Ask: Where does a city get its electricity?

Ribosomes = Factories

• Synthesize proteins
• Like factories: build goods (proteins)
Image: Ribosomes on ER next to factory assembly line

Describe ribosomes. Invite students to name things factories produce.

Endoplasmic Reticulum = Transport Network

• Rough ER has ribosomes for protein transport
• Smooth ER makes lipids and detoxifies
• Like road/highway system: transports materials around city

Discuss endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Compare smooth vs rough ER to local roads vs highways.

Golgi Apparatus = Post Office

• Modifies, sorts, packages proteins
• Like the post office: ships packages to destinations
Image: Golgi stacks next to post office

Show how Golgi processes and ships proteins. Ask what in a city packages and delivers mail.

Cell Membrane = City Gates

• Regulates what enters/exits the cell
• Like city gates/fences: control traffic in and out
Image: Cell membrane diagram with city gate graphic

Explain the cell membrane’s role. Prompt: How do gates keep a city safe?

Guided Practice

  1. Pair up and get the Cell City Organelle Worksheet
  2. Match each organelle to its city counterpart
  3. Write the function in your own words
  4. Ask questions as you go!

Introduce the guided practice. Remind students to use the worksheet and work in pairs. Circulate and support.

Exit Ticket

Individually, list:

  1. Three organelles + their city analogies
  2. One function for each organelle
    Turn in before you leave.

Explain exit ticket instructions. Emphasize clarity and completeness. Collect when done.

    b. Function: “Controls and regulates cell activities; stores genetic information (DNA).”Thought Process:
    • Identify organelle role: control center and information storage.
    • City equivalent: City Hall directs city operations and keeps official records.
  2. Mitochondria
    a. City Analogy: Power Plant
    b. Function: “Produces ATP (energy) for the cell.”Thought Process:
    • Identify organelle role: energy production.
    • City equivalent: power plants generate electricity to run a city.
  3. Ribosomes

Activity 2: Extend Your Analogy (Sample Answer)

Choose Lysosome

a. Organelle Name: Lysosome

  • Identified role: breaks down waste materials and cellular debris.

b. City Analogy: Recycling Center / Garbage Disposal

  • Rationale: both dismantle unwanted materials into reusable components and remove waste.

c. Function (in your own words): “Lysosomes digest old organelles, food particles, and pathogens, recycling their parts.”

Reflection (Sample Response)

How does using a city analogy help you understand and remember cell organelle functions?

“By comparing the nucleus to City Hall, I remember that it directs everything and holds the cell’s ‘blueprints.’ Thinking of ribosomes as factories makes it easy to recall that they build proteins. The analogy connects unfamiliar biology terms to things I see every day.”

Use these answers and reasoning steps to evaluate student responses. Award full credit for correct analogies, accurate functions, and clear explanations that reflect the thought processes above.
