Catching Good Choices: The Power of Positive Reinforcement!
How can we make our classroom (and home!) an even more amazing place?
Welcome students and parents. Explain that today's lesson is about recognizing and celebrating good actions. Start with the warm-up activity to get everyone thinking positively.
What is 'Positive Reinforcement'?
It's all about noticing and celebrating good things!
When you see someone doing something helpful, kind, or working hard, and you tell them, that's positive reinforcement!
Introduce the idea that we can 'catch' people doing good things. Ask students if they've ever felt good when someone noticed something positive they did.
Why is it important?
- It makes people feel good! (Like a high-five for your brain!)
- It helps us learn what to do more of.
- It creates a happy and supportive classroom.
- It helps us be better friends and family members.
Explain why it's so powerful. Connect it to personal feelings and how it helps everyone learn and grow. Give examples from everyday life.
Examples in Action!
- "Wow, you did an amazing job sharing your crayons with your partner!"
- "I noticed you cleaned up your toys without being asked. That's so helpful!"
- "Great effort on that math problem! You kept trying even when it was tricky."
- "Thank you for listening so carefully during story time."
Give some clear examples relevant to the classroom and home. Ask students to brainstorm one or two more simple examples.
Reading & Discussion: The Power of Praise
Let's read about how powerful our positive words can be, and then discuss what we learned!
Transition to the reading and discussion. Emphasize that positive words are a gift we can give.
Activity: Reinforcement Round-Up
Time to practice! We'll work in groups to role-play giving and receiving positive reinforcement. Think about:
- What did you see?
- How did it make you feel?
- What specific words can you use?
Explain the role-play activity. Encourage students to think about specific, genuine feedback. Remind them to be supportive of their group members.
Game Time: Reinforcement Bingo!
Let's play a game to see how many positive actions we can spot and celebrate! Listen for the instructions and get ready to shout "BINGO!"
Introduce the game. Make sure everyone understands the rules of Bingo and how it connects to positive reinforcement.
Wrapping It Up: Your Positive Power!
Today we learned:
- What positive reinforcement is.
- Why it's super important.
- How to give and receive positive feedback.
You have the power to make others (and yourself!) feel great!
Recap the main points. Ask students for one new thing they learned or one way they plan to use positive reinforcement.
One Positive Thought...
Before we go, let's share one positive thought or plan. What's one positive thing you'll try to do or say today or tomorrow?
Explain the Cool Down as a final reflective piece. Collect their cool-down thoughts.
Your Mission: A Positive Project!
You'll get a Project Guide and a Rubric to help you create something that spreads positive reinforcement!
Get ready to be a positivity superhero!
Introduce the project and rubric. Explain that this is a chance to apply what they've learned in a creative way, perhaps even involving their parents at home.

Warm-Up: What Makes You Shine? (5 minutes)
(Display Catching Good Choices Slide Deck Slide 1)
"Good morning/afternoon, everyone! Welcome, students and parents! Today we're going on an exciting adventure to discover something super powerful that can make our classroom, our homes, and even our whole world a happier place. To start, let's do a quick 'Warm-Up: What Makes You Shine?' activity. I want everyone to think of one positive thing about yourselves or a classmate – maybe something kind you did, something you're good at, or something helpful you noticed someone else doing. No need to shout it out yet, just have it in your mind. We'll share a few in a moment!"
(After a moment, call on a few students to share their positive thoughts.)
"Wonderful! It feels good to think about positive things, doesn't it?"
Introduction to Positive Reinforcement (10 minutes)
(Display Catching Good Choices Slide Deck Slide 2)
"So, what we just did, thinking and sharing positive things, is a little bit like what we're going to talk about today: Positive Reinforcement! It sounds like a big fancy phrase, but it's actually something we can all do every single day. Look at our slide: what do you think 'positive reinforcement' means just by looking at the words?"
(Allow students to share ideas.)
"That's right! 'Positive' means good, helpful, or adding something. 'Reinforcement' means making something stronger or more likely to happen again. So, positive reinforcement is all about noticing and celebrating good things! It's when you see someone doing something helpful, kind, or working really hard, and you tell them about it! You're giving them a 'high-five for their brain' to show them you noticed their good choice!"
(Display Catching Good Choices Slide Deck Slide 3)
"Why do you think this is so important? Why should we make an effort to notice and tell people about their good choices?"
(Encourage responses. Guide them to discuss how it feels to be noticed and how it encourages more good behavior.)
"Exactly! When we give positive reinforcement:
- It makes people feel good! (Like that high-five for your brain!)
- It helps us learn what to do more of. If someone says, 'Great job sharing!' you're more likely to share again.
- It creates a happy and supportive classroom. Everyone feels valued and seen.
- It helps us be better friends and family members. Imagine how much happier our homes will be if we all do this!"
(Display Catching Good Choices Slide Deck Slide 4)
"Let's look at some examples:"
- "Wow, you did an amazing job sharing your crayons with your partner!"
- "I noticed you cleaned up your toys without being asked. That's so helpful!"
- "Great effort on that math problem! You kept trying even when it was tricky."
- "Thank you for listening so carefully during story time."
"Can anyone think of another simple way to give positive reinforcement? What's something positive you might say to a friend or family member?"
(Take a few responses.)
Reading & Discussion: The Power of Praise (10 minutes)
(Display Catching Good Choices Slide Deck Slide 5)
"Now, to understand even more about how powerful our positive words can be, we're going to do a reading called The Power of Praise Reading. I'll hand out the reading now, and you can either read it quietly to yourselves or we can read it together as a class. After we finish, we'll use these Discussion Prompts: Sharing the Good to talk about what we learned."
(Distribute reading. Allow time for reading. Then, facilitate discussion using the prompts.)
Activity: Reinforcement Round-Up (15 minutes)
(Display Catching Good Choices Slide Deck Slide 6)
"Alright, it's time to put our positive reinforcement skills into action! We're going to do an activity called 'Reinforcement Round-Up.' I'm going to divide you into small groups, and each group will get a Positive Reinforcement Scenarios Worksheet. Your task is to role-play the scenarios on the worksheet."
"When you role-play, one person will act out the scenario, and another will practice giving positive reinforcement. The person giving feedback should think about:
- What did you see or hear specifically?
- How did it make you feel? (Optional, but good for older students)
- What specific words can you use to praise the good choice?"
"Remember to be supportive and encouraging to your group members. Everyone will get a chance to practice giving and receiving positive reinforcement. Let's get into our groups and get started!"
(Circulate among groups, providing guidance and feedback.)
Game: Reinforcement Bingo (10 minutes)
(Display Catching Good Choices Slide Deck Slide 7)
"Fantastic job with the role-playing, everyone! Now, for a fun way to practice spotting positive actions, we're going to play a game called Reinforcement Bingo Game!"
"I'll explain the rules:
- Each of you will get a Bingo card with different positive actions or behaviors listed on it.
- As we continue our day, or even during this game, if you see someone doing one of the actions on your card, you can mark it off.
- The goal is to get five in a row – horizontally, vertically, or diagonally – and shout 'BINGO!'"
"We'll play for the next 10 minutes. Keep your eyes peeled for those good choices!"
(Facilitate the game.)
Wrap-Up & Cool-Down (10 minutes)
(Display Catching Good Choices Slide Deck Slide 8)
"Wow, what a great lesson today! We've learned so much about positive reinforcement. Can someone quickly tell me one thing they remember learning today?"
(Take a few responses.)
"Excellent! Today we learned:
- What positive reinforcement is.
- Why it's super important for everyone.
- And how to give and receive positive feedback to make our world a better place.
You truly have the power to make others (and yourselves!) feel great just by noticing and acknowledging good choices!"
(Display Catching Good Choices Slide Deck Slide 9)
"To wrap up our lesson, let's do our Cool-Down: One Positive Thought. I want everyone to think about one positive thing they will try to do or say today or tomorrow. It could be giving a specific compliment, helping someone, or even just noticing something good in their own day. Take a moment to think, and you can write it down or just keep it in your mind."
(Allow a moment for reflection. Collect any written responses if applicable.)
(Display Catching Good Choices Slide Deck Slide 10)
"Finally, to continue our journey of spreading positivity, you'll be getting a My Positive Reinforcement Project Guide and a Positive Reinforcement Project Rubric. This project is your chance to apply what you've learned in a creative way, perhaps even involving your parents at home, to spread positive reinforcement in our community.
"Get ready to be a positivity superhero! Any questions before we finish up?"
(Answer any final questions.)
Warm Up
Warm-Up: What Makes You Shine?
Instructions:
-
Think Time: Close your eyes for a moment (if you feel comfortable) and think about something positive. It could be:
- Something kind you did for someone recently.
- Something you are really good at.
- Something helpful you noticed a classmate or family member doing.
-
Share Out: We will go around and share one positive thought with the class. When it's your turn, briefly share what makes you or someone else "shine"! Don't worry, there are no wrong answers, just positive ones!
Reading
The Power of Praise: Making Everyone Shine Brighter
Have you ever had someone tell you, "Great job!" or "I love how you helped your friend"? How did that make you feel? Probably pretty good, right? That warm, happy feeling you get is a little bit of magic called positive reinforcement!
Think of it like sunshine for a plant. When a plant gets enough sunshine, it grows strong and beautiful. When people get positive reinforcement, they also grow – not taller, but stronger in their good choices and confidence!
What is Positive Reinforcement?
It's simply noticing when someone does something good and letting them know about it. It could be:
- A compliment: "Your drawing is so creative!"
- Words of appreciation: "Thank you for putting your toys away."
- Recognition of effort: "You worked really hard on that puzzle, even when it was tricky!"
- A high-five or a thumbs-up: A non-verbal way to show you noticed!
Why is it So Powerful?
- It makes people feel valued: Everyone wants to feel seen and appreciated. When you get positive feedback, it shows that someone noticed your effort and good intentions.
- It encourages more good behavior: When you know what you did well, you're more likely to do it again! If a teacher praises you for raising your hand, you'll probably remember to raise your hand next time.
- It builds confidence: Knowing you're doing a good job helps you believe in yourself and be brave enough to try new things.
- It creates a happy environment: Imagine a classroom or a home where everyone is looking for good things to say and do! It makes everyone feel safer, happier, and more willing to help each other.
How Can You Use It?
It's easy! Just keep your eyes and ears open for good things. When you see someone being kind, working hard, sharing, or showing good manners, tell them! Be specific about what you noticed. Instead of just "Good job," try "Good job sharing your pencils with Mia!"
And remember, positive reinforcement isn't just for others! You can also acknowledge your own efforts and achievements. Give yourself a mental high-five when you stick with a tough task or help out at home. You deserve praise too!
By practicing positive reinforcement, we can all help each other shine brighter every day!
Discussion
Discussion Prompts: Sharing the Good
After reading "The Power of Praise Reading", let's discuss what we learned about making others (and ourselves!) shine brighter.
- What is one new thing you learned about positive reinforcement from the reading?
- Can you think of a time when someone gave you positive reinforcement? How did it make you feel?
- The reading mentioned that positive reinforcement helps people learn what to do more of. Can you give an example of this?
- Why do you think it's important to be specific when giving positive feedback? (Instead of just "Good job," try "Good job cleaning up your art supplies!")
- How can we use positive reinforcement in our classroom to make it an even happier place?
- How can you use positive reinforcement at home with your family?
- The reading also talked about giving yourself positive reinforcement. What does that mean to you?
Activity
Role Play: Reinforcement Round-Up!
Objective: To practice giving and receiving specific positive reinforcement in different scenarios.
Instructions:
- Form Groups: You will be divided into small groups.
- Assign Roles: In each scenario, one person will be the "Actor" and another will be the "Reinforcer."
- Read Scenario: The group will read a scenario from the Positive Reinforcement Scenarios Worksheet.
- Act It Out: The "Actor" will briefly act out the behavior described in the scenario.
- Give Reinforcement: The "Reinforcer" will then give specific, positive feedback to the "Actor." Remember to:
- Mention exactly what good choice you observed.
- Explain (briefly) why that choice was good or how it made you feel.
- Use an encouraging tone of voice.
- Switch Roles: After each scenario, rotate roles so everyone gets a chance to be both the "Actor" and the "Reinforcer." You can also have a third person observe and give feedback on the reinforcement itself!
Group Discussion after each Role Play:
- How did it feel to give positive reinforcement?
- How did it feel to receive positive reinforcement?
- Was the feedback specific? Could the "Actor" tell exactly what they did well?
- What could we do even better next time?
Get ready to spread some positivity! Your teacher will let you know which scenarios to start with.

Quiz on Positive Reinforcement
Test
Positive Reinforcement Test
Answer Key
Answer Key: Quiz and Test on Positive Reinforcement
Quiz on Positive Reinforcement
Question 1: What is positive reinforcement?
- Correct Answer: B. Noticing and celebrating good choices or behaviors.
- Explanation: Positive reinforcement involves adding something positive (like praise or recognition) to increase the likelihood of a desired behavior happening again. It's about 'catching' someone doing something right and acknowledging it.
Question 2: Why is positive reinforcement important?
- Correct Answer: B. It helps people know what behaviors to do more of.
- Explanation: When behaviors are reinforced positively, individuals learn which actions are valued and encouraged, making them more likely to repeat those actions. It also builds confidence and creates a positive environment.
Question 3: Give one example of positive reinforcement you might give to a classmate.
- Correct Answer: Answers will vary but should be specific and positive.
- Examples:
- "I noticed you shared your crayons with me, that was very kind!"
- "Great job helping Sarah pick up her books!"
- "You really focused during the reading time, excellent concentration!"
- Reasoning: Effective positive reinforcement is specific, detailing the exact behavior being praised so the individual knows what to repeat.
Question 4: What does it mean to be 'specific' when giving positive feedback?
- Correct Answer: C. To clearly describe the exact good behavior you observed.
- Explanation: Being specific means pointing out the exact action or effort that was good, rather than making a general statement. This helps the person understand precisely what they did well.
Question 5: How does receiving positive reinforcement make you feel?
- Correct Answer: Answers will vary but should include positive emotions.
- Examples: Happy, proud, encouraged, seen, valued, motivated, confident.
- Reasoning: Positive reinforcement is designed to create positive feelings, which in turn strengthen the desired behavior and foster a sense of well-being.
Positive Reinforcement Test
Question 1: Which of these is the best definition of positive reinforcement?
- Correct Answer: C. Adding something desirable to increase a desired behavior.
- Explanation: This definition captures the essence of positive reinforcement from a behavioral science perspective – an addition (positive) that strengthens (reinforces) a behavior.
Question 2: Describe, in your own words, why it is important to use positive reinforcement in a classroom or home setting. Give at least two reasons.
- Correct Answer: Answers should include ideas like: it makes people feel good, it encourages more of the desired behavior, it builds confidence, it creates a positive environment, it helps people learn what to do.
- Reasoning: Focus on the impact on the individual (motivation, confidence, learning) and the environment (positive atmosphere, cooperation).
Question 3: A student cleaned up the art station without being asked. Which of the following is the most effective positive reinforcement statement?
- Correct Answer: C. "Thank you for taking the initiative to clean the art station, that helps keep our classroom tidy!"
- Explanation: This statement is specific (cleaned art station), acknowledges initiative, and explains the positive impact (helps keep classroom tidy), making it highly effective.
Question 4: Think of a challenging situation where a student might be struggling (e.g., difficulty with a math problem, arguing with a friend). How could a teacher or parent use positive reinforcement in that situation, even if the student hasn't fully succeeded yet? Provide a specific example.
- Correct Answer: Answers will vary but should focus on reinforcing effort, persistence, or small steps towards the desired outcome.
- Examples:
- Math Problem: "I see you've tried two different ways to solve that math problem, keep up that effort, you're really thinking!"
- Arguing with a friend: "I appreciate how you used a calm voice to explain your feelings to your friend, that's a great way to talk through a disagreement." (even if the argument isn't fully resolved).
- Reasoning: Reinforcing effort and positive strategies during challenging times is crucial for building resilience and problem-solving skills, even when the final outcome isn't perfect yet.
Question 5: On a scale of 1 to 5 (1 = Strongly Disagree, 5 = Strongly Agree), how much do you agree with this statement: 'Giving and receiving positive reinforcement can make our school a happier place for everyone.'
- Correct Answer: 5
- Explanation: This question assesses the student's understanding of the overall positive impact of reinforcement on the community. A high agreement indicates a grasp of the lesson's core message.
