Welcome students and parents. Explain that today's lesson is about recognizing and celebrating good actions. Start with the warm-up activity to get everyone thinking positively.

What is 'Positive Reinforcement'?

It's all about noticing and celebrating good things!

When you see someone doing something helpful, kind, or working hard, and you tell them, that's positive reinforcement!

Introduce the idea that we can 'catch' people doing good things. Ask students if they've ever felt good when someone noticed something positive they did.

Why is it important?

  • It makes people feel good! (Like a high-five for your brain!)
  • It helps us learn what to do more of.
  • It creates a happy and supportive classroom.
  • It helps us be better friends and family members.

Explain why it's so powerful. Connect it to personal feelings and how it helps everyone learn and grow. Give examples from everyday life.

Today we're going on an exciting adventure to discover something super powerful that can make our classroom, our homes, and even our whole world a happier place. To start, let's do a quick 'Warm-Up: What Makes You Shine?' activity. I want everyone to think of one positive thing about yourselves or a classmate – maybe something kind you did, something you're good at, or something helpful you noticed someone else doing. No need to shout it out yet, just have it in your mind. We'll share a few in a moment!"

It sounds like a big fancy phrase, but it's actually something we can all do every single day. Look at our slide: what do you think 'positive reinforcement' means just by looking at the words?"

"That's right! 'Positive' means good, helpful, or adding something. 'Reinforcement' means making something stronger or more likely to happen again. So, positive reinforcement is all about noticing and celebrating good things! It's when you see someone doing something helpful, kind, or working really hard, and you tell them about it! You're giving them a 'high-five for their brain' to show them you noticed their good choice!"

The Power of Praise: Making Everyone Shine Brighter

Have you ever had someone tell you, "Great job!" or "I love how you helped your friend"? How did that make you feel? Probably pretty good, right? That warm, happy feeling you get is a little bit of magic called positive reinforcement!

Think of it like sunshine for a plant. When a plant gets enough sunshine, it grows strong and beautiful. When people get positive reinforcement, they also grow – not taller, but stronger in their good choices and confidence!

What is Positive Reinforcement?

It's simply noticing when someone does something good and letting them know about it. It could be:

  • A compliment: "Your drawing is so creative!"
  • Words of appreciation: "Thank you for putting your toys away."
  • Recognition of effort: "You worked really hard on that puzzle, even when it was tricky!"
  • A high-five or a thumbs-up: A non-verbal way to show you noticed!

Why is it So Powerful?

  1. It makes people feel valued: Everyone wants to feel seen and appreciated. When you get positive feedback, it shows that someone noticed your effort and good intentions.
  2. It encourages more good behavior: When you know what you did well, you're more likely to do it again! If a teacher praises you for raising your hand, you'll probably remember to raise your hand next time.
  3. It builds confidence: Knowing you're doing a good job helps you believe in yourself and be brave enough to try new things.
  4. It creates a happy environment: Imagine a classroom or a home where everyone is looking for good things to say and do! It makes everyone feel safer, happier, and more willing to help each other.

How Can You Use It?

It's easy! Just keep your eyes and ears open for good things. When you see someone being kind, working hard, sharing, or showing good manners, tell them! Be specific about what you noticed. Instead of just "Good job," try "Good job sharing your pencils with Mia!"

And remember, positive reinforcement isn't just for others! You can also acknowledge your own efforts and achievements. Give yourself a mental high-five when you stick with a tough task or help out at home. You deserve praise too!

Instructions:

  2. Assign Roles: In each scenario, one person will be the "Actor" and another will be the "Reinforcer."

Objective: To actively observe and identify positive behaviors in yourself and others.

Instructions:

  1. Each player gets a Bingo card.
  2. Keep your eyes and ears open! Throughout the next X minutes/during our activities, try to spot the positive behaviors listed on your card.
  3. When you personally observe one of the actions, mark that square on your card. (You can only mark a square if you actually saw it happen).
  4. The first person to get five squares in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) shouts "BINGO!"

What is your mission?

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to become a Positivity Superhero! You will choose one of the project options below to show what you know about positive reinforcement and how to use it.

Project Options (Choose ONE):

Option 1: "Positivity Power-Up" Poster/Digital Presentation

Create a poster or a short digital presentation (e.g., 3-5 slides) that explains positive reinforcement to others. Include:

  • A clear definition of positive reinforcement in your own words.
  • At least 3 reasons why it's important.
  • At least 3 specific examples of positive reinforcement in action (e.g., in school, at home, with friends).
  • An inspiring message about how people can use it.
  • Bonus: Include your own original drawing or graphic!

Option 2: "Catching Good Choices" Storybook
