Career Kickstart Lesson Plan

Learners will identify key job search strategies, draft a basic resume, and practice professional interview etiquette to boost employability and workplace confidence.

Transitioning into employment can be daunting without structured guidance. This lesson provides foundational vocational skills—job searching, resume writing, and interview etiquette—to support adult learners in securing and succeeding in their first roles.

  • Job Search Tips Handout, * Resume Basics Template, * Interview Etiquette Role-Play Cards, * Whiteboard and Markers, and * Projector or Screen

Prep

Prepare Materials

10 minutes

  • Print sufficient copies of Job Search Tips Handout and Resume Basics Template
  • Cut out and organize Interview Etiquette Role-Play Cards into sets of 2–3 per student pair
  • Arrange seating for pair work
  • Test projector or screen to display slides or examples
  • Write session agenda on the whiteboard

Introduction & Icebreaker

  • Welcome students and introduce the lesson objectives
  • Quick round-robin: each student shares one job goal or challenge
  • Note common themes on the whiteboard to engage relevance

Vocational Skills Overview

8 minutes

  • Distribute Job Search Tips Handout
  • Present 3–4 key job search strategies (online platforms, networking, targeted applications)
  • Review Resume Basics Template: section order, concise bullet points, formatting tips
  • Explain interview etiquette do’s and don’ts and hand out Interview Etiquette Role-Play Cards

Step 3

Resume Drafting Activity

8 minutes

  • Instruct students to open their own document or use printed template
  • Guide them to draft: contact info, objective/summary, skills, and experience sections
  • Circulate to provide individual feedback and formatting suggestions

Step 4

Interview Role-Play

6 minutes

  • Pair students and assign one as interviewer, one as candidate
  • Each pair draws an Interview Etiquette Role-Play Card scenario
  • Students conduct a 2-minute mock interview, focusing on body language and clear responses
  • After 3 minutes, swap roles and repeat

Step 5

Reflection & Next Steps

3 minutes

  • Reconvene for group debrief: ask each student to share one takeaway and one action step
  • Encourage students to refine resumes and practice interviews with peers outside class
  • Provide information on campus career services or online resources for ongoing support

Interview Etiquette

• Listen actively & answer clearly

Discuss each tip and why it matters. Ask students for examples of professional behavior.

Interview Role-Play

  1. Pair up (one interviewer, one candidate)
  2. Draw a scenario from Interview Etiquette Role-Play Cards
  3. Conduct a 2-minute mock interview
  4. Swap roles and repeat

Explain the role-play process. Monitor pairs and provide on-the-spot feedback.

Interview Etiquette Role-Play Cards

Print, cut apart, and distribute one card per pair (each takes turns as interviewer and candidate).


Card 1: Customer Service Representative

Interviewer:

  • Ask: “Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult customer.”
  • Observe posture, eye contact, and tone of voice.

Candidate:

  • Greet politely (“Hello, thank you for meeting with me.”)
  • Answer using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
  • Maintain eye contact and sit up straight.
  • Conclude with a brief thank-you gesture.

Card 2: Administrative Assistant

Interviewer:

  • Ask: “How do you prioritize tasks when you have multiple deadlines?”
  • Note clarity of response and confidence.

Candidate:

  • Open with a professional greeting.
  • Describe your prioritization framework (e.g., lists, calendars).
  • Keep answers concise and organized.
  • Close by asking a clarifying question about workload.

Card 3: Warehouse Associate

Interviewer:

  • Ask: “Explain how you would ensure safety in the workplace.”
  • Watch for appropriate body language (leaning forward vs. slouching).

Candidate:

  • Start with a brief introduction of your experience.
  • Highlight specific safety protocols you’ve followed.
  • Speak clearly and confidently.
  • End by expressing enthusiasm for a safe work environment.

Card 4: Retail Sales Associate

Interviewer:

  • Ask: “What strategies do you use to meet sales targets?”
  • Listen for concrete examples and a positive attitude.

Candidate:

  • Greet the interviewer cheerfully.
  • Share specific methods (upselling, product knowledge).
  • Use “I” statements and action verbs.
  • Thank the interviewer before transitioning roles.

Card 5: Entry-Level IT Support

Interviewer:

  • Ask: “Describe a time you helped someone troubleshoot a technical issue.”
  • Pay attention to candidate’s listening skills and patience.

Candidate:

  • Acknowledge the problem clearly before answering.
  • Outline steps you took to diagnose and solve it.
  • Keep technical language simple and professional.
  • Finish by highlighting your willingness to learn.

Card 6: Barista / Café Crew Member

Interviewer:

  • Ask: “How do you ensure positive customer interactions during busy periods?”
  • Observe how the candidate handles stress in their tone.

Candidate:

  • Begin with a polite greeting and brief self-introduction.
  • Describe how you manage time and multitask effectively.
  • Emphasize friendliness, eye contact, and clear communication.
  • Conclude by asking about team culture.
