Welcome students and introduce the lesson. Explain that today’s goal is to explore different careers and see how their interests might match future professions.

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  1. Define what a career is and how it differs from a job
  2. Identify your own interests and strengths
  3. Conduct basic research on multiple careers
  4. Present your findings in a creative way

Read aloud each objective. Encourage students to ask questions if anything is unclear.

What Is a Career?

• A career is more than a job—it’s a long-term journey
• It often involves ongoing learning and growth
• Careers can change as your interests and skills evolve

Ask: What comes to mind when you hear the word “career?” Capture responses on the board.

Discussion Prompt: Interests & Passions

• List 5 things you love doing in your free time
• Share one interest with a partner and explain why it matters to you
• Discuss how this interest might connect to a career

Have students turn to a partner. Give them 2–3 minutes to list interests and passions, then share with the class.

Research Steps

  1. Choose 3 careers that intrigue you
  2. For each, find:
    • Job description and daily tasks
    • Required education or training
    • Key skills and personal qualities
    • Typical salary range
  3. Record your findings in a chart or notes

Display sample websites or printouts. Walk through each research step and model one career example.

Project Overview

Create a one-page brochure or 3-slide presentation on one chosen career. Include:
• Career summary and why it interests you
• Required education/training and skills
• Day-in-the-life snapshot
• Visuals or graphics to engage your audience

Explain rubric: clarity, visuals, content accuracy, creativity. Show a quick example if time allows.

Reflection & Next Steps

Answer the following:
• What surprised you about your research?
• Which career seemed most aligned with your interests?
• What can you do this week to learn more? (e.g., interview someone, read an article)
• How might you start building the skills needed?

Encourage students to reflect honestly. They can write responses or share aloud.

Closing & Homework

• Complete the worksheet summarizing your 3 careers
• Bring your draft brochure/slides to the next class for peer review
