Working Memory Recall Rubric
A tool for assessing 5th-grade students’ use of working memory strategies during class activities. Teachers and students can use this rubric to track growth in chunking, visualization, rehearsal, and organization.
Scoring Levels
1 – Beginning: Strategy rarely used or ineffective
2 – Developing: Strategy used inconsistently or with partial success
3 – Proficient: Strategy used correctly and with growing independence
4 – Exemplary: Strategy used consistently and effectively without prompting
| Criteria | 1 – Beginning | 2 – Developing | 3 – Proficient | 4 – Exemplary |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chunking | • Rarely breaks information into smaller groups • Overwhelmed by long lists | • Attempts to group items but miss logical connections • Groups of uneven size | • Consistently groups items into logical chunks • Demonstrates appropriate chunk sizes | • Independently creates efficient, meaningful chunks • Seeks creative ways to reduce cognitive load |
| Visualization | • Does not create mental images • Difficulty recalling details | • Creates simple images but they lack detail or relevance • Requires teacher prompts | • Forms clear mental pictures tied to content • Uses simple diagrams or symbols | • Generates vivid, detailed images or mind maps • Integrates visuals spontaneously to aid recall |
| Rehearsal | • Rarely repeats or practices new information • Relies heavily on prompts | • Repeats information only when reminded • Uses few rehearsal strategies | • Regularly rehearses key points aloud or in writing • Chooses at least one appropriate rehearsal method | • Independently engages in rehearsal (e.g., self-quizzing, teaching peers) • Adapts strategies to suit different tasks |
| Organization | • Work area and materials are disorganized • Information is scattered | • Partially organizes notes or resources • Sometimes misses steps | • Keeps materials and notes in logical order • Follows a consistent note-taking format | • Demonstrates exemplary system for organizing information (charts, outlines) • Helps peers organize their work |
